Is the PGA Tour cursed with bad weather, or just bad planning? What's your take?

The 2024 Wyndham Championship was marred by chaos last week. All thanks to Hurricane Debby, whose intrusion brought in terrible weather, and the storm delayed the start of the tournament by a day. Well, it was just the beginning. There were repeated suspensions, and eventually, the venue did not allow the presence of spectators. Such was the struggle at the Sedgefield Country Club.

There was a notable rise in the number of players withdrawing due to the delays. Nonetheless, amidst all obstacles, Aaron Rai clinched his maiden PGA Tour victory and was crowned the winner. Will the PGA Tour suffer the same fate as the first tournament of the FedEx Playoffs is about to kickstart?

The FedEx St. Jude Championship is scheduled from August 15 to August 18 at the TPC Southwind. Only the top 50 players will be headed to the BMW Championship next weekend. Last year, it was Lucas Glover who defeated Patrick Cantlay in a playoff and won the championship. Who will it be this year, amidst rain predictions on all four days?

It looks like this time too, Jay Monahan & Co. are up for a drastic fate. “Hot and humid conditions return Thursday into Friday with the humidity making it feel like 105+ each of these days,” says the official Tour’s weather report.

The opening round on Thursday is predicted to have only a 20% chance of rain. The temperature will be as high as 97 degrees and as low as 74 degrees. Additionally, the winds will be blowing from S to SW at a speed of 5–10 mph. The heat index will be 107 F. Nonetheless, the predictions suggest ‘mostly hot and sunny.’

After a decent forecast on the first day, the Friday round might have afternoon thunderstorms, but it will still be hot. The temperature is predicted to go as high as 96 degrees and as low as 74 degrees, and the winds will be blowing from S to SW at a high speed of 10–14 mph. The heat index will be around 106 F. Additionally, there are 30% chances of rain, so if you are planning to go for the first two rounds, make sure to have your umbrellas.

Thunderstorms for the final two rounds of the St. Jude Championship

As the players head to the ultimate round of the St. Jude Championship on Saturday, the conditions might slightly deteriorate. For the penultimate round, there are high possibilities of thunderstorms, along with a 40% chance of rain. The temperature is predicted to go as high as 92 degrees and as low as 75 degrees, with winds blowing from the north to the northwest at a speed of 6–12 mph.

The final round, too, will, in all probability, have a heavy thunderstorm in the morning, as predicted on the Tour’s official forecast. However, there are fewer chances of rain (30%), which might come as a relief, but not completely. The temperature will go as high as 88 degrees and as low as 72 degrees, with winds blowing from the northwest at 6–12 mph.

Now, whether the disruptions will be as bad as the Wyndham Championship last weekend or not, is yet to be seen! Stay tuned to find out the fate of the St. Jude Championship.
