After ending up last following round 1 of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the 2013 US Open winner appeared to be in trouble. With a disappointing 76 in the first round, he terribly needed to get back in the game. And he did exactly that. He made a course record in round 3 of the event and jumped higher on the leaderboard.

During a press conference, the golfer spoke about the challenges he had faced during the first round. He also revealed his mindset as he played the third round. Let’s dive into the story.

Speaking of the first round, Justin Rose explained how he struggled with the speed of the greens, which caught him off guard. Despite good pre-tournament putting practice, he faced challenges on the greens, missing putts — a four-putt, and a couple of three-putts.

“I guess just chased a couple of the wrong pins at the wrong time and just compounded a few errors, and it all amounted to 76.” He spoke about the challenges of controlling distances with short irons because of the heat causing the ball to go farther.

Following the rough start, the FedEx Cup Player recovered in the second round and improved his score to 67. He then pulled off a brilliant third round and scored a 61. With that score, he equaled the course record at TPC Southwind, sharing it with three other players.

He also spoke about what was on his mind as he kept adding up hole after hole. “I actually didn’t realize 61 was the course record, but great. Nice little bonus for the day.”

Rose’s LIV Golf contemporary Bryson DeChambeau recently scored a 61, followed by a 58, at the Greenbrier event. Now this timely record by a PGA Tour Pro seems to be a fitting response to the rival golfer’s feat. With a little bit of luck, Rose could have done even better!

Rose Discusses the Possibility of a Mighty 59

Rose mentioned he considered a 59 possible at one point. He confessed he was positively working toward it. The plan was to score a couple of birdies on the last two holes, but he ended up scoring par on both of them.

Rose believes that a 59 is always possible if a player is in form and is playing on a soft course. The golf course is soft. I think 59 is out of the equation when the golf course is firm, but the fact it’s soft, that means it’s on,” he said.
