In a year when the golf world was crowded with chaos, Ludvig Aberg managed to carve his name alongside the big feats of the sport. Having nabbed two victories (one on the PGA Tour and another on the DPWT) in his debut year, the 24-year-old has openly flaunted his love for the sport!

However, fans will be surprised to hear that golf was not Aberg’s first sports love. In fact, in his recent talks, the young golfer opened up about the alternate path that he had almost taken that could have left him as a pro athlete on a very different set of greens!

The young Swede recently appeared on the Smylie Show Podcast. Talking to the host there, the one-time PGA Tour winner revealed that before he found his love for golf, he wanted to be a soccer star. “Soccer was my main sport when I grew up,” claimed the 24-year-old. “And that’s what I wanted to do. And that’s what I spent my hours doing up until I was maybe 12, 13.”

How then did he come to become a golfer? Well, it was all because of his father. Aberg explained that it was his old man who played golf, introduced him to sport, and took him to courses when he was young. Initially, however, the sport did not appeal to him. “I never really liked it,” he stated. But it was all he and his dad did during the summers. The summertime was great for golf. Football season was over.”

Over time, swinging a club clearly started appealing more to the golf pro than scoring goals on a field, and eventually he began treading down the path of golf greens rather than football turfs. “We literally went to the course in the morning and then got picked up at night when it got dark,” he said, explaining how attached he had grown to the sport thereafter.

Of course, Ludvig Aberg couldn’t have been more right in his decision. While he didn’t know it then, now he’s already gone and etched his name alongside many greats in the history books of golf. And while there’s undoubtedly more to come, just his amateur feats and achievements in just a few months of being a pro-stand testament to him picking the correct sport!

Aberg’s impressive career so far

In the podcast, the Swedish golfer stated that he played in his first tournament when he was 13. After that, he was hooked. Jumping forward to today, his love for the sport is quite evident, especially through his achievements.

Aberg’s amateur career spans from 2016 to 2020, during which he won the Annika Sörenstam Trophy and even the Swedish Teen Tour Order of Merit. As an amateur, he also scored two good wins on the Swedish Golf Tour: the Katrineholm Open and the Barsebäck Resort Masters, both in 2020.

After turning pro too, the Swede did not let his hotstreat die out. Aberg debuted professionally in 2023 at the RBC Canadian Open in March. Just six months later, he grabbed his first win on the PGA Tour at the RSM Classic in November. The golfer even grabbed his first Ryder Cup win in his debut season.
