From missed first tees and losing track of important moments to an overload of commercials and background music. Golf fans haven’t had the best TV experience for quite some time. As for their hopes for the future? Well, let’s just say they didn’t see a change coming anytime soon. However, as calls for Jay Monahan’s resignation run rampant, the 53-year-old has at least solved one problem that has followed the men’s circuit for quite some time.

From getting ridiculed and shamed by fans for poor golf coverage to now getting applauded for it, Monahan’s decision to use a different broadcaster for the latest event has been fruitful. The Farmers Insurance Open, which crowned Matthieu Pavon as the 2023 champion, could’ve been a turning point in the viewing experience for golf fans!

Over the past several months, PGA Tour fans complained about the lack of proper coverage, the camera shifting focus on anything but the golfer playing, and the biggest culprit of the fan’s disappointment: the huge commercial load in between the rounds. And it’s not just the PGA Tour coverage. Golf enthusiasts voiced their disapproval over the underwhelming event coverage for 2023’s Ryder Cup, as they found the commercial load to be “jarring” and “absurd.”

Moreover, during the 2023 Hero World Challenge, fans’ outcry for better coverage was heard once again. After months of complaints, Jay Monahan chose a different partner for a TV broadcast, which helped them get praised by the golf world. Instead of NBC, CBS was broadcasting the Farmers Insurance Open. The result was suitable, as No Laying Up posted on X, applauding it. CBS is absolutely nailing this 72nd hole. Trevor, Dottie, and Jim are all over every aspect of it. Great theater with no commercials.

At the 72nd hole, Matthieu Pavon was making history. Holding off Nicolai Højgaard with a birdie to cap off a final round three-under 69, the 31-year-old became the first Frenchman to win on the PGA Tour. What made the coverage better was the commentators being “all over every aspect” of the game. Additionally, “CBS had an extra hour of coverage today (4 hours vs. 3), but kept the commercial load the same as if it was a 3-hour window.” Coming after the abysmal Ryder Cup coverage, this would be a huge win for the Tour. Not to mention for Jay Monahan.

This one move may have made Monahan breathe a huge sigh of relief, as the leadership of the PGA Tour has been under fire for quite some time. Since June 2023, Monahan has been questioned, disparaged, and quite literally told to leave his position. Much of it has had to do with players defecting to LIV Golf and Monahan’s handling of the merger. These calls have only gotten louder recently, with even a six-time PGA Tour winner thinking Monahan should resign.

The upsetting Monahan reality

Jay Monahan frequents the tabloids whenever he angers the Tour players and fans. The PGA Tour commissioner has been called a “hypocrite” since he first announced the now-delayed PIF-PGA Tour-DP World Tour merger. The fans and the players felt a sense of betrayal by the Tour’s leadership and did not shy away from telling the 53-year-old about their displeasure regarding the $3 billion merger.

This time, Hunter Mahan shared his thoughts on the PGAT leadership. Mahan told Bunkered how Monahan tried to control damage after everything went haywire. “He’s trying to repaint everything and make it look as new. It’s a lot of ‘say one thing and do another.’ ‘It’s a lot of ‘it’s a players tour’ but the players aren’t notified when the changes are made. I don’t know how he can continue with what’s going on.”

He also said that “Jay is going to lose his job,” not that he will get fired. He believes Monahan will hand over his resignation himself. The PGAT commissioner has tried to correct his mistakes. With the bad coverage improving, is it possible that once the merger is announced, the players and fans won’t be as angry with the leadership as before?
