The birdie fest is in full swing at Kapalua’s Plantation Course, with the pros taking advantage of the perfect weather conditions to rack up some seriously low scores. As the old saying goes, “May the birdies be ever in your favor,” and it seems like Hideki Matsuyama and Co. are certainly living up to that mantra. With seven birdies in a row, Sepp Straka set the tone for the day, and it wasn’t long before the rest of the field followed suit.

Russell Henley, who shot a respectable 4-under 69, joked that he felt like he’d been “lapped” by the field, such was the pace of the scoring. Similarly, the leaders Hideki Matsuyama and Collin Morikawa marched the matching rounds of 11-under-62. The birdie barrage by Matsuyama lifted him to 27-under 192. Per the latest tweet by Matt Vincenzi, SI writer, it seems like not everyone is a fan of the birdie fest, though. “Save me the course architecture BS. Tournaments with -30 winners suck. Blast Kapalua into the sun,” he wrote, summing up the sentiments of many fans who feel that the course is too easy for the pros.

It’s a fair point, really – when the winning score is likely to be somewhere in the region of 25-30 under par, it does make you wonder if the course is challenging enough for the world’s best golfers. As the tournament heads into the weekend, it’ll be interesting to see how low the scores can go. Will Hideki Matsuyama continue to lead the charge, or will someone else step up to the plate and challenge him? We’ll have to wait and see.

However, the fans will be keeping a close eye on proceedings, and they won’t be afraid to speak their minds if they feel like the course is too easy as they have done recently.

Netizens are expressing their frustration with the Sentry 2025 venue

“Worst tournament on the calendar for donkey years The year Cam Smith won it with close to -40 says it all,” said one fan.
Well, it is kind of true that the Sentry Tournament of Champions can be a bit of a snooze-fest, but the 2022 tournament was actually pretty epic, especially on the final day. The battle between Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith was intense, with Smith ultimately emerging victorious. What’s crazy is that Smith carded rounds of 65, 64, and 64, breaking Justin Thomas’ field record, while Rahm was hot on his heels with rounds of 66, 66, and 61.

Many and I mean, many fans were hating on the course, and well for good reason as one fan said, “Sh*t course”, while the other said, “Lmao it’s ridiculous.” Well, the Kapalua Plantation is one the hardest golf courses to play in because of its windy conditions but there are a few tricks you can follow to ace your game even when nature is against you. Playing golf in windy conditions, like those found at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort in Maui, Hawaii, home of the Sentry golf tournament, can be a real challenge. To overcome this, gauge the wind speed and direction beforehand, practice on the range to understand its effect on your shots, and adjust your club selection and swing accordingly.

Coming back to the topic, this one fan said, “I lost interest on Friday!” while the other bluntly stated, “Get rid of this tournament course!” Well, you will be surprised to find out that back in 2009, the PGA Tour had thought of eliminating the Sentry Tournament of Champions from Kapalua. And it’s not hard to see why.

While tournament chairman Gary Planos had expressed uncertainty about the future at the time, saying, “We’re not sure what’s going to happen,” many players made it clear that they weren’t fans of the course. In fact, Davis Love III acknowledged that “there’s a few players that don’t like coming here,” which is a pretty diplomatic way of saying that some pros can’t stand the place.
