Phil Mickelson has faced a number of final-round collapses in the past. So much so that the 6-time Major champion was dubbed as the “best player not to win a major” before finally securing his first Masters win in 2004. However, even though he continued winning majors in the following years, Mickelson suffered more collapses. But his attitude has changed with growing experience, as was seen after yet another doom in the 2015 Open Championship.

Phil Mickelson and his ride through the 2015 Open Championship

Mickelson closed the gap for an exquisite career Grand Slam with his maiden victory at the British Open in 2013. He made his way out at the Old course two years later for his second Claret Jug as one of the favorites.

While his performances weren’t on par with the leading counterparts, Mickelson did alright and was in contention for a top 10 finish. However, a dreadful tee on the 17th (Road hole) all but vanished his chances of a good finish.

The Road hole requires golfers to go over the hotel with their initial drive, but Mickelson’s shot landed on the balcony. A strenuous and prolonged process took him 7 shots to reach the hole at the 4-par hole, leading to a triple bogey.

Indeed, the finish wasn’t what Mickelson was expecting after toiling endlessly for three days. However, he took the loss sportingly, shooting par in the final round before walking off the course with his kids. He reserved a smile for the cameras as well, with his two daughters side-by-side, in his arms.

Mickelson has two daughters named Sophia and Amanda, and a son named Samuel. The eldest kid in the family, Amanda, attends Brown University and majors in Egyptology, while Sophia majors in Architect and will be graduating a couple of years later.

The moment was certainly special for the two daughters, who were quite young at that time. ‘Lefty’ is often seen indulging in cheerful moments with children, be it tipping hundreds of dollars in lemonade stands, or tossing his golf ball to a young supporter.

Mickelson eventually finished the tournament tied at 20th place alongside six others with a score of 281. American golfer, Zach Johnson, emerged victorious in the tournament in a playoff against Marc Leishman and 2010 winner, Louis Oosthuizen.

As things stand, the PGA Tour has taken a stand against the rebel league players, with the bodies conducting majors yet to announce a concrete decision.
