Is David Thompson's success more about his talent or the incredible support from his family?

Young players are seizing the spotlight and revolutionizing the sport of golf. Davis Thompson is one such player who has managed to garner a lot of attention with his recent performance. He opened the 2024 season tying for the 57th position in the Sony Open in January, and he has gained some major accolades too. The cherry on top was his second-place finish at the Myrtle Beach Classic in May and at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week.

He has failed to grab any victories on the PGA Tour so far. Nonetheless, this dream, too, might not be very far-fetched for him. Despite playing in the same field as legendary golfers like Jordan Spieth, Kevin Yu, and Jason Day, he has managed to get to the top of the leaderboard after the penultimate round at the John Deere Classic! From being an amateur to turning pro, there has been one person who stood strong like a grave beside him and inspired him. It was his father, Todd Davis.

Davis Thompson was born on June 5, 1999, in Georgia. But he moved to Alabama to attend the Lee Scott Academy. He was a part of the basketball team and even won the state title in 2016 with his high school team. His father, Todd Davis, is the person who inspired him to become a golfer.

Todd himself was a part of the Georgia men’s team from 1985 to 1988 and also captained it in 1987 and 1988. Todd Thompson is now the Executive Director of the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour, based in Auburn itself. He also has a sister, Frannie, who got married about two years before him. It was idolizing his father and going to tournaments with him that made Thompson want to become a golfer one day. Well, it was not just his father who stood like a rock-solid pillar in his career. But he also has an exceptionally loving and caring partner, whose support he values to the core.

Davis Thompson and his partner, Holly Grace Robinson, took their relationship to the next level when Thompson proposed to Grace in November 2022. Like many soon-to-be husband-and-wife couples, they had plans for their wedding. The pro golfer and his fiancee originally planned a winter wedding, which was set to take place on December 16, 2023. However, fate had other plans for them, and their wedding date was bumped up to early April. Finally, they tied the knot on May 27, 2023. What is the reason behind the sudden change of plan? So that Holly’s mother could be a part of the nuptial ceremony.

Robinson, apart from his family, is a huge source of happiness and perseverance. During their honeymoon in North Carolina, he posted a picture of his wife and even wrote, “Honeymoonin’ with HG. Crazy to think that we were supposed to get married today. God stepped in though and provided another plan that was far better than what we had originally planned. I pray that if you’re reading this you find hope in Christ this season as we celebrate not only the birth of our Savior but His saving Grace that’s given to those who repent and put their faith in Him.”

Talking about how her wife adds light to his life, the golfer said, “Yeah, she means everything to me. We knew each other in high school and started dating in college. So I’ve known her forever. She’s my best friend, and I’m just… I felt a lot more comfortable this year having her on the road with me and traveling together. Last year, it kind of got lonely just because we weren’t married yet until May. Even then, I felt like I was still kind of traveling alone. It’s been awesome to have her by my side. I wouldn’t want anybody else.”
