TGL’s format is not something that is easy to digest for die-hard golf fans. Watching golf played on a simulator in an indoor setting just doesn’t feel right. As world-class as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are, the most devoted fans who have loved golf for many years might find it difficult to adjust to what TGL has to offer. Even those who were a part of the tournament couldn’t grasp how the indoor simulation league could succeed.
Before it even began, Woods & McIlroy faced a lot of heat due to one of their own players. The person in question was Rickie Fowler. The beloved golfer was caught questioning how the format of TGL would find much success. He admitted that he doesn’t “fully know” how the GOAT’s vision will play out in the future. Despite that, TGL has been a hit with the fans. The TV ratings and attendance in the arena have proven that. But despite all its success, one individual is still baffled about how TGL will be able to sustain it in the future.
Aman Gupta joined Andrew Whitelaw recently for an EssentiallySports exclusive interview. During one of the segments, the reporter asked Gupta, “What do you think of the TGL? I feel like it’s very modern and a lot of sports we’re seeing evolutions and new alternatives and initiatives that drive new, kind of younger audiences. What do you make of it? What do you like about it?”

The Korn Ferry Tour pro shared his connection with TGL. In the EssentiallySports exclusive interview as he said, “I live in Palm Beach Gardens. So far, it’s just right down the road. I’ve met some guys that have gone and seen it. I’ve seen a little bit of it on TV.”
However, Gupta didn’t mince his words when he admitted, “I don’t really understand the draw to it. I understand what they’re trying to do. I think I’m a bad person to ask just being a golfer. I’m always going to want to see golf on a golf course.” Just like any true golfer who reacted before TGL began, Gupta, too, can’t grasp the concept of indoor golf.
Continuing to share his views about TGL in the EssentiallySports exclusive interview, the 26-year-old added, “I think there is definitely an aspect like it will get more people to be into golf. It’s much shorter, it’s more relaxed, it’s a more casual kind of thing.
What’s your perspective on:
Does TGL's success signal a shift in golf culture, or is it alienating true golf fans?
Have an interesting take?
However, he added, “I don’t really get it. I just think they’re just trying to bring in more guys to the game, which is great for golf. The more people watching, the better for all of us. But for me, it’s not really my cup of tea.” Despite understanding how TGL is benefiting golf, Gupta seems more like a traditional golfer who doesn’t understand the appeal of it.

For the longest time, many other players also held the same views as Aman Gupta. Let’s see what they had to say about TGL.
Aman Gupta’s comments about Tiger Woods’s TGL resonate through other golfers
Aman Gupta is perplexed about Tiger Woods’ TGL’s appeal despite its proven success. But even before the league began, it was in the firing line of many golfers who thought it wouldn’t grab the attention of the fans. LIV Golf pro Ian Poulter was one of those individuals. In an interview, Poulter simply raised the question, “Will you be turning in on a Tuesday night to watch guys hitting it into a screen?” The answer may be a loud yes now, but back then, there was no clear blueprint for it. TGL was always a mystery for everyone.

No Laying Up Podcast host, D.J. Piehowski, was also quite critical about TGL. Just like Aman Gupta, he couldn’t understand how the indoor league would work. In one of their videos, he was quoted saying, “They’re fake holes like these are fake holes like that exist in a fake world,” about the greens in the arena. Hopefully, Woods and his team have helped change his mind.
