Trump's near-ace: A genuine skill or just another staged moment for the cameras?

The ex-POTUS Donald Trump’s golf prowess is an open secret. Golf great Tiger Woods has even praised his hitting ability and back in March Trump claimed to have won not one but two trophies at his West Palm Beach golf club. But just as many people questioned his accomplishments, at that time, they refused to be convinced by the near ace that the politician carded.

Trump is known in golf circles for the numerous courses owned by his Trump Golf. He owns 12 such properties in the US, two in Scotland, and one each in Ireland and UAE. But apart from the business side of things, Trump seems to be a decent golfer as he as a handicap of 2.8, which means he can play a round of golf at 2.8 strokes over par given his best scores. His ability on the greens was in focus once again in a video shared by NUCLR GOLF.

A tweet was shared by NUCLR GOLF showcasing the ex-president driving a ball off the tee alongside his son, Trump Jr. While he walked off after the shot, the ball found itself hitting the flagstick, causing the now-78-year-old to miss a possible hole-in-one. “Oh my god it hit the pin!” exclaimed his son as the video showed the ball and then zoomed back to Trump. Someone filming the video zoomed in and we could see the ball a few feet away from the hole. Trump once again showed that he is a decent enough amateur golfer.

He has drawn praise from many pros over his golfing skills. Legendary Tiger Woods, who teed up with Trump at the Riviera Country Club in 2017, said, “For a person who is 70 years old, he hits it hard. People don’t realize he’s that old and he can rip it and hit it as far as he does.”

Eighteen-time major winner Jack Nicklaus even compared Trump’s game to his own in 2019. Nicklaus said, “Trump is probably the best player,” out of the few presidents he has played with. Bryson DeChambeau was also complimentary of Trump’s iron game in 2022, saying, “He’s actually a really good golfer. He stripes it down the middle of the fairway and has good iron game and putts it pretty well.”

Trump's near-ace: A genuine skill or just another staged moment for the cameras?

Have an interesting take?

The businessman recently collaborated with LIV Golf Pro DeChambeau in the latter’s new ‘Break 50’ episode which aired on 23 July. The golfing community was able to witness Trump’s skills during the session as the duo carded a total of twelve birdies and five eagles, one shy of the show’s goal. Yet many people online refused to believe Trump’s ‘almost ace’ that he dished out in the video.

This recent feat comes under scrutiny because of Trump’s past claims, which include beating Phil Mickelson’s record.

Better than Phil Mickelson? Donald Trump’s golf claims have been a topic of debate

Last year, wrote on his Truth Social platform that he won a senior tournament in Bedminster. He wrote, “I am pleased to report, for those that care, that I just won the Senior Club Championship (must be over 50 years old!) at Bedminster (Trump National Golf Club), shooting a round of 67.”  This score was eight strokes lower than the 75 six-time major champion Phil Mikelson shot on the same course two weeks earlier during a LIV Golf tournament. Since it was a senior tournament, there may have been many changes to the course making it better suited to amateur golfers. Yet, the feat came under the scanner.

So it was no surprise that people online once again questioned the legitimacy of the video posted. One user wrote, “This is AI-generated and didn’t actually happen.”

Back in March, the former President boasted about winning two tournaments, The Club Championship and the Senior Club Championship at his West Palm Beach course. Jack Nicklaus even presented him with the 2024 Trump International Golf Club Most Improved Player award. Still, he couldn’t get rid of AI comments under the video as another user pointed out, “It’s amazing what AI can do.”

Following his claim of winning the two championships, Joe Biden posted a tongue-in-cheek comment, writing, “Congratulations, Donald. Quite the accomplishment.” But other than his claims being dubious do fans have another reason to doubt that he almost hit an ace?

Remember Donald Trump’s ‘Shankelson’ moment? Well, the fans sure do. Back at the Trump National Golf Club in LA, the politician shanked one of his shots, sending the ball wide and landing it between the trees and the bunker, despite aiming for the greens. Hence, after witnessing such a shot, one person couldn’t help but call out the recent video writing, “This s**t is so fake. Lmao.”

In September 2023, another clip of the senior golfer hit the internet, where he was seen taking a ‘gimme’ on the greens. Interestingly, he was spotted shoving the ball along his walk to the hole, making “easy work on the greens.” Consequently, the internet went ahead and called out the ex-POTUS for the same. The reaction from the community this time was no different, as one netizen responded, ” ‘Close to a walk-off ace…’ Yeah, the rest of us like to call that missing.”

Well, it looks like Trump’s history of tall claims may have come back to bite him as fans are refusing to believe he actually made the incredible shot. What do you think? Do you feel his video was fake? Let us know what you think below!
