You can feel the tension in the air as the golf world teeters on the edge of a major shake-up. With traditional tours facing off against new rival leagues, it’s anyone’s guess what the future holds. One thing’s for sure, though – the sport is at a crossroads, and the next move will be a game-changer. In the latest episode of the Smylie Show on YouTube, ex-tour player Smylie Kauffman shared his candid thoughts on the current state of golf, particularly the allure of LIV Golf for players from the DP World Tour.

“I still feel like the players coming from the DP World Tour are gonna wanna potentially go to LIV Golf”, he said. Kauffman expressed his concerns that talented players from the European Tour are being nurtured and developed, only to be poached by LIV Golf. He feels that this creates a frustrating dynamic, where the DP World Tour invests time and resources into these players, only to watch them leave for the rival tour. “It seems like that’s the avenue now, if you play well in the major or you win a major that’s like an exemption to LIV Golf, or if you’re a European Tour player who plays well enough, it’s like there’s your avenue to get to LIV Golf. So, it’s like you raise them up and you watch them leave”,  he continued.

Kauffman’s comments serve as a stark warning to both the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour, highlighting the challenges of retaining top talent amidst LIV Golf’s lucrative offers. The DP World Tour faces an uphill battle in keeping its stars from defecting, as LIV Golf’s high-profile platform and financial muscle continue to lure players away. As Kauffman noted, playing well in majors or winning a major has become an unofficial exemption to join LIV Golf.

This raises pressing questions about the long-term sustainability of the DP World Tour and its ability to compete with LIV Golf’s financial might. The PGA Tour would do well to take heed of Kauffman’s warnings, lest it faces a similar exodus of its own top talent.

DP World Tour players are considering joining LIV Golf

DP World Tour stars are eyeing a potential move to LIV Golf, with reports emerging that a player who secured a PGA Tour card through the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai Rankings has approached a LIV Golf franchise about joining the breakaway league. This development comes as LIV Golf’s offseason transfer window is now open, allowing teams to trade players and bring in fresh faces. With talks of a potential peace deal between LIV Golf and the DP World Tour, the possibility of DP World Tour players making the switch to LIV Golf is becoming increasingly likely.
