With every passing day, Rory McIlroy’s personal life tends to get entangled in a newfound layer of drama. After the news of his filing for divorce with ex-wife Erica Stoll came to light, the golfer cited how their marriage had become “irretrievably broken.” One could not help but associate the divorce with two things: McIlroy’s ex, Caroline Wozniacki, and how will the golfer deal with the heartbreak this time. We have the answer to the first one!
An exclusive source has revealed to US Weekly that Wozniacki “wants no part of his [Rory McIlroy’s] drama.” After all, the duo’s relationship ended on a sour note when McIlroy ended things with the now-33-year-old tennis star over a 3-minute-long phone call. She later revealed in an interview, “I was shocked. I thought at least it would be face-to-face or something but there was nothing.” However, as per the unnamed source, friends of the former #1 tennis star are calling McIlroy’s divorce an act of “karma” for treating her the way he did a decade ago so close up to the wedding.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” McIlroy said in a statement at the time of his split with Wozniacki. McIlroy got married to Stoll on April 20, 2017. The two welcomed their daughter, Poppy, in 2020, 3 years after their marriage. Maybe, the golfer was not ready to be a family man in 2014, but he found the zeal later on!

“Rory was the last straw for Caroline when it came to men. She always wanted a nice home and family life. An under-the-radar existence with family. That’s not Rory.” the source explained to US Weekly. Wozniacki tied the knot with the former NBA All-Star David Lee in June 2019. She now has two children; daughter Olivia who is 2, and son James who is 18 months. The golfer’s ex-fiancée is now living a “wonderful life” with her husband, “who is a family man from a nice family who is retired and focuses on the kids.”
Considering the chaotic breakup between McIlroy and Wozniacki was the last time the Northern Irishman was witnessed in the hold of heartbreak, the aftermath of his divorce was linked to the hyperproductive era he stepped into back in 2014, and rightfully so! The Northern Irishman went on a winning rampage, and so is expected this year too, especially at Valhalla. So how did the heartbroken 35-year-old perform at the PGA Championship?
Has heartbreak had a similar effect on an aching Rory McIlroy the second time around?
It seems that the predicted boost to his career post announcement of filed divorce was true. McIlroy shot a whopping total of s
ix birdies in round one and ended the first round at T4 with an opening score of 5-under 66. The two-time PGA Championship winner repeated history by securing the same score as the last time he appeared at the event with a broken heart in 2014 and lifted the Wanamaker Trophy.ADVERTISEMENT

Talking about the same data post-round interview, the pro golfer said, “I thought I got a lot out of my game today. Some good up-and-downs, the chip-in on six. I had a little bit of a scrappy part around the turn there. Not really happy with how I played but at least happy with the score.”
A decade ago, the Irish golfer won the PGA Championship, and The Open after her split with the tennis star. It remains to be seen whether the 4-time Major winner will repeat history and climb up the ranks to lift the PGA Championship’s trophy once again. Stay tuned to EssentiallySports for regular updates about the 2024 PGA Championship as the excitement unfolds at Valhalla!
