Scottie Scheffler: America's hero or just another overhyped golfer? What's your take?

Should Scottie Scheffler be crowned the King of Comebacks? His stupendous performance at the 2024 Olympics certainly earned him the title. The world’s No. 1 was far from grabbing the gold medal as he entered the final round at Le Golf National on Sunday. Initially, he was four shots behind the leaders of the leaderboard, defending champion Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm.

However, scoring back-to-back four birdies in the last five holes launched him to the top! He defeated England’s Tommy Fleetwood by one stroke at a whopping 19-under. Besides being the world’s No. 1, Scheffler is also America’s Olympic hero. Dallas cowboy legend Tony Romo, an avid golfer and Scheffler’s close friend has unraveled why he has been rightly crowned so!

In an interview at the Invited Celebrity Classic in April, ex-NFL legend Tony Romo explained why he considers Scottie Scheffler an absolute genius. The PGA Tour Champions recently shared a snippet of this interview on their official X account to celebrate Scheffler’s victory at the City of Lights. In the video Romo couldn’t stop gushing about Scheffler’s sheer golfing prowess. The former Dallas QB, who estimated he has played around 500 rounds with the world’s No. 1 golfer, said, “I don’t think I’ve ever played a round of golf with Scottie Scheffler and him not break 70 ever, which is insane.

The latest Olympic victory in Paris has increased Scottie Scheffler’s win tally of the season from six to seven. So far, Scottie Scheffler has dominated the PGA Tour this season. In his 16 appearances, he has made it to the top 10 14 times! and the two where he was unable to do so were the American Express and the third major of the season at the U.S. Open. Even after the unfortunate incident at Valhalla, Mr. Cool maintained his composure and finished T8 at the PGA Championship with a 7-under in the final round.

Taking to this, Romo, comparing him to the legendary Tiger Woods, even added, “It’s just he all of a sudden gets it back, and the next shot he can autocorrect. He’s one of the best pitchers ever; his short game is incredible. Remember Tiger? If he putts well, he wins. If not, he’s in the mix.”

Well, it looks like American golfers have a knack for dramatic Olympic finishes. Just like Scheffler’s thrilling comeback this year, Xander Schauffele’s victory four years ago at the quadrennial event had a deeply emotional motivation behind it, making it even more memorable!

Before Scottie Scheffler came Xander Schauffele. For the two-time major winner, winning the Olympics was more than just a dream that he had seen. His father wanted to become an Olympian but could not because of a horrendous car accident that cost him his left eye, and Schauffele knew he had to do it for his father! Initially in the ultimate round, Rory Sabbatini went out a few groups ahead of the champion, carding a whopping 10-under 61, causing ripples at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.

Schauffele had a flawless opening nine, but he started to fumble a bit during the end. He even ended up carding a bogey on the 14th hole. Recovering, Schauffele carded a greenside bunker for birdie, and the gold medal was only four feet away from him. “I just reminded myself, this is just a 4-footer. All you have to do is make it. No big deal,” he said. And well, he did it by finishing one stroke ahead of Sabbatini, fulfilling both the Schauffele dreams! Well, this year too, he did a pretty great job, close to defending his title, nonetheless, this year was Scheffler’s time to shine!
