Can Lexi Thompson finally shut down her critics with a win at the Evian Championship?

The top players in women’s golf are converging on Évian-les-Bains town for the 11th edition of the Amundi Evian Championship, the fourth major of the year. With the event just three days away, the field is set, boasting nearly all the top 50 players from the Rolex Rankings.

For many pros, the Amundi Evian Championship represents a pivotal moment to reset their 2024 season or break free from winless streaks. Amid recent criticisms, here are five pros who desperately need a victory at Evian to silence their doubters.

1. Lilia Vu

Headlines preceding the 2024 Chevron Championship announced the withdrawal of World No. 2 Lilia Vu from the year’s first major, shocking many in the golf world. It was later revealed that Vu was battling a persistent back injury, a setback that had already forced her to withdraw from the Blue Bay LPGA and HSBC Women’s Championship earlier in the year. Her struggles continued at the U.S. Women’s Open, where she also had to withdraw.

Despite these setbacks, Vu remained resilient. She returned to form at the Meijer LPGA Classic, delivering a stunning final-round 7-under 65 to claim her fifth career title. This performance was followed by a surprising T2 finish at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, suggesting she had overcome her injury woes. To fully regain her peak form, a victory at the Champions Course could be the final step Vu needs.

2. Rose Zhang

Once hailed as the women’s Tiger Woods of golf, Stanford student Rose Zhang burst onto the LPGA Tour scene with a promising rookie year. However, her initial success has been overshadowed recently. In the 2024 season, Rose Zhang struggled, missing three cuts, including those at the U.S. Women’s Open and Chevron Championship.

Even at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, where she has triumphed twice before, Zhang finished outside the top 15, settling for T35 on the leaderboard. Her challenges continued when she withdrew from defending her title at the Mizuho Americas Open, citing illness (an upset stomach) after just three holes in the opening round.

Undoubtedly, the 23-year-old has struggled to replicate her successful rookie year. The upcoming Amundi Evian Championship could be the catalyst Zhang needs to improve her major performances, having fallen short in the last three events and aiming for her first major win.

3. Charley Hull

The last time the Kettering native won on the LPGA Tour was at the 2022 Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America. In her decade-long career, Charley Hull has surprisingly not captured any major titles despite coming close, notably finishing as a runner-up at the U.S. Women’s Open and AIG Women’s Open last year.

Indeed, Hull needs a victory to rejuvenate her form and return to the winner’s circle in the women’s circuit. The Champions Course in France, known for its more forgiving layout compared to other major venues, could provide the ideal setting for Hull to silence her critics with a strong performance.

4. Lydia Ko

The Kiwi pro has amassed twenty victories in her LPGA Tour career, along with numerous accolades. Lydia Ko’s achievements have earned her a place in the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame at the young age of 27. However, in the 2024 season, Ko is chasing a crucial milestone that has so far eluded her.

The former world No. 1 began her season triumphantly by winning the HGV Tournament of Champions at Lake Nona Golf Course. Lydia Ko followed this with a solo runner-up finish at the Drive Championship, where Nelly Korda began her historic streak. However, the 27-year-old gradually lost her form over subsequent events.

Ko’s latest performance at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship saw her finish tied for 46th place, her best result since missing the cut at both the U.S. Women’s Open and the Mizuho Americas Open earlier in the season. A victory at the 2024 Amundi Evian Championship could reignite Ko’s momentum and potentially secure her a place in the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame before the season concludes.

5. Nelly Korda

What more can be said about the world No. 1? Nelly Korda has had a historic run on the LPGA Tour in the 2024 season. The 25-year-old secured her first victory at the Drive On Championship and swiftly added six more wins before the end of June. However, since then, Nelly Korda has struggled, missing the mark with three consecutive cuts.

Surprisingly, this season marks a first for the 14-time LPGA Tour winner’s career, with two missed cuts at the last two majors. Adding to her woes, Nelly Korda recently suffered a dog bite, leading to her withdrawal from the Aramco Team Series London, where she triumphed in the 2023 season. Clearly, the 25-year-old has been facing challenges, compounded by this new injury, and she needs more than a top-10 finish to turn her 2024 season around. A victory at the Amundi Evian Championship could be just what she needs.
