How can a car enthusiast not recognize the legendary Jack Nicklaus? Is golf history fading away?

Have ever heard of a car named after a golfer? Not really, right? Because that instance is usually rare in the golf world, however, being one of the legendary golfers, Jack Nicklaus was awarded that prestigious honor. In 1992, after sponsoring around 17 PGA events, the Lincoln Motor Company collaborated with the ‘Golden Bear’ for the iconic ‘Lincoln Town Car Jack Nicklaus Edition.’

However, after 1993 the production of the car was discontinued and remained as a rare collectible for golf and Nicklaus fans. It is not easy to find one on the road but at the Insurance Auto Auctions yard, one is sitting, covered in dust and looking undrivable. YouTuber Randy from Auto Auction Rebuilds showcased this special edition in his recent video. The car was inspired by Nicklaus’s six Masters victories and the green jackets he received. It has a metallic green color with a golden trim named after Nicklaus’s monicker, ‘Golden Bear’.

The car also had Golden Bear and Jack Nicklaus’ signature near each front fender, on the dash above the radio, sewn on the front mats, and lower deck lid. With Nicklaus’ symbols everywhere, the YouTuber still didn’t recognize the great golfer as it didn’t ring any bell. He said, “This is a Jack Nicklaus [read it as if you are struggling to pronounce it] Signature Series never heard of this person but they’ve got his name everywhere.”

Right after saying that he didn’t recognize Nicklaus, the YouTuber accurately predicted that some people would be eating him in the comments for not recognizing the golfing legend. And it turned out right, but not so dramatically, they just kindly reminded him of who Jack Nicklaus is!

As Jack Nicklaus goes unrecognized, fans come out in his support

Up until Tiger Woods’s debut in 1996 and long after that, Jack Nicklaus was the record breaker and maker. However, as the 82-time PGA Tour winner rose the stairs of success he broke many of Nicklaus’s records, such as winning more PGA Tour titles (82) than Nicklaus (73).

Thus, this fan said, ” “The Golden Bear” is Jack Nicklaus….one of the greatest golfers of all time. He had all the records til Tiger Woods came along, he has many gold [sic golf] courses around the world.” To this day though, Woods is yet to break the record set by Nicklaus for winning the most majors (18). While many were shocked that Randy was not aware of Jack Nicklaus, a few also made fun of him as he struggled to pronounce the golfer’s last name. This fan alluding to the same, commented, “Jack Nick-o-Lus” was a world famous golfer.” And we bet that he still is!

Have an interesting take?

As a golf enthusiast, it is hard to believe that one of the pioneers of golf could go unrecognized. Like, how can you not know Nicklaus? But it is the reality that in 2024 a car enthusiast is unaware of him. As unbelievable as it is, Randy was supported by some users and this particular one commented, “I think Randy is pulling our legs….EVERYBODY knows who Jack Nicklaus is…. what an awesome car! A little TLC and it’ll be ready to go. Even if you don’t know who Jack Nicklaus is, Randy.. we still love your videos so keep them coming….:)” Another reciprocated a similar opinion and was flabbergasted by the unawareness of the YouTuber. Taken aback by his reaction, they shockingly said, “You gotta be joking. Not a fan of Golf but he is one of the most famous of all time… lol.”

To this day, nobody has broken Nicklaus’s record of winning the green jacket as much as six times so a car being named after him is understandable. And when it was actually released in the early 90s, all the craze was about the Lincoln Town Car Jack Nicklaus Edition. The company revealed that a total of 20% of sales in 1992 came from these cars. Thus, they planned to make 500 more in 1993 but due to high demand, 7,700 were produced and one of such is in the yard of Insurance Auto Auctions. So, praising the car, this user commented, “That Jack Nicholas town car edition was a really classy Lincoln back in the day. That green with white interior was really an eye popper sitting in the show room and out in the sunlight. I believe these town cars were some of the best Lincoln town cars ever made.”
