It has been a tumultuous year for the golfing community, what with the surprise of conflicts between the PGA Tour golfers and LIV Golfers. Despite that, the Saudi-backed tour made it to its 1-year mark and LIV Golf defectors have plenty to say.

On the First Anniversary of LIV Golf, many golfers are looking back at their time and experience with the Saudi-PIF-funded circuit. While their experience has been enlightening and joyous for the most part, they also have some not-so-great memories.

LIV Golf defectors had to face a lot of controversies and hostility from the golfing community. But, as they see it, they took a step that was beneficial for them both personally and professionally. Many golfers such as Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and others have spoken about how happy they are with LIV Golf.

Now, looking back at the year he had, Bubba Watson also has a few words to share about the unfair treatment pre-dating the $3 billion merger. The Irish Golfer was happy to share his and many other LIV Golfers’ opinions on their Twitter.

This time last year, the American golfer was recuperating from knee surgery so he joined the Saudi-backed circuit a little late. However, he would have joined sooner simply because of the camaraderie and the “team atmosphere.” Thinking back to the harsh comments from the PGA Tour golfers, fans, and the authorities in the American circuit, he does not have fond memories of them.

“When you look back at the hostility, yeah, it’s sad that we were in that,” he reflected. “We had those problems, name calling. Everybody is trying to do a job. If you all change over news stations, nobody yells at you for changing over news. It’s the same news but on a different station.”

The two-time Major Champion made some valid points. After all, anyone would question why the hostility toward players who are just doing their job. “All the name-calling and yelling is just sad. A year later now everybody is friends again,” he shared.

The LIV Golfer deems the sport in high regard and wants to see it progress. “There were some kids out here yesterday. The Majesticks yesterday had a bunch of kids out here learning the game,” he added gladly. “That’s the whole goal of all these tournaments is to grow the game, and when we say grow the game, get more people to play golf, even if it doesn’t matter what the age is. It’s the whole thing.”

Seems like Watson has a vision of his own, and he loves that LIV Golf is helping in achieving that. It is probably his reason for being happy where he is now much like Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and the other 45 golfers who are now part of the LIV Golf circuit. He also seems rather pleased to have camaraderie with the PGA Tour loyalists again, much like Sergio Garcia who shared a meaningful moment bonding with his friend during the events in the American circuit.

Bubba Watson isn’t the only one reminiscing

“It’s been a fun year. Hopefully, we can get behind it and the game of golf grows and we do some great things,” Bubba Watson looked forward to the future. But he wasn’t the only one who had a great year despite the controversies and has plans for a brighter future at LIV Golf.

On the 1-year anniversary, Ian Poulter also shared his wise words. “I mean, I guess 12 months in, 15 events, the golf landscape has changed a lot in that period of time,” said the English golfer. “I think what LIV has been able to achieve in that window has been very impressive.” He, much like most LIV Golfers, including his compatriot Lee Westwood, agree that the PIF-backed circuit has taken great strides.

I think we offer something a little different, different being good, and I’m pretty excited about where it’s going,” he said proudly. Looks like the 1-year anniversary reminded everyone of both good and bad times. What matters is how they perform on the greens and the players know that better than anyone.
