As Noah Kent’s fingers wrap around the grip of his clubs, his eyes catch a glimpse of the initials on his glove. JH, NK, and LS are three names that spark a fire within him. JH stands for John Harris, his mentor, who believed in him when he didn’t believe in himself. The Minnesota native and the 1993 U.S. Amateur winner’s words of wisdom still echo in his mind, instilling confidence and a steadfast focus.

After securing the semifinal spot, Kent said, “I talked to him this morning. He was just like, ‘Keep it simple today. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re good enough, and you belong here.'” Under Harris’ guidance and encouragement, Kent didn’t flinch from his target. The result? He finished the quarterfinals with six birdies and an eagle.

Moreover, NK, his initials, reminds him of the boy who dreamed big and the man who’s now living that dream. Meanwhile, LS, that is Livi Shafer is a name that brings a smile to his face. She’s his rock and his partner in every sense. His girlfriend, a member of the University of Iowa dance team, encourages him forward, and her love fuels his passion for the game.
