Ever since its emergence, LIV Golf has done its best to stand apart from the tour. From hosting team events to playing music during tournaments, the series has since the beginning promoted itself as the modern version of golf. The defectors, too, have done their bit to make the game stand out. And recently, Cameron Smith added to that by drawing a lot of attention to himself by publicly performing a famous Australian party tradition on the course. Unfortunately for him and the Saudi-backed league, the fans didn’t take too well to it.

The golf world reacts to an Australian move by Cameron Smith

LIV Golf saw its first event for the 2023 season draw to a conclusion recently. At Mayakoba, Smith finished tied for 5th place and took home $887,500. His team, the Rippers GC, unfortunately, didn’t come close to winning. Not as great a start as the golf pro had hoped for, but that didn’t stop him from having some fun after and drinking beer. And it went viral all over Twitter as soon as LIV Golf posted it!

Smith took to performing a “shoey,” a stunt done usually in Australia at parties where the drinker first pours their drink into their shoe and then drinks it straight out of the shoe. Sounds a bit weird, doesn’t it? Well, the one-time major winner sure didn’t think so, and neither did the lady joining him. But the golf world didn’t share their enthusiasm.

As the pair drank their beer out of their shoes, the fans lashed out at their gross deed. They furiously took to the comments, sarcastically questioning whether this was how LIV intended to grow the game of golf.

Fans even went on to point out that the short video was setting a poor example for the younger generations in the sport. They further suggested that Smith was just embarring himself as well as the Breakaway Tour.

Moreover, the fans described the video as the Saudi-backed league trying too hard to be cool. They felt like the entire video felt forced and cringe.
