Whoever loves golf surely admires the golfer that Tiger Woods is! After all, he has a lot of feats to his name. But, have you ever wondered where it all started and how things were made comparatively easier for the 82-times PGA Tour winner?

Well, he fairly owes it to one of the golf pioneers, Jim Howard. Howard was a member of Pontypool Golf Cub for 35 years and was the first black member of the PGA. His service in the world of golf toward the colored golf professionals has been immeasurable.

This September marks Howard’s 80th birthday, and his granddaughter has been trying hard to get a birthday card from the golfing legend. She shared that it would mean a lot to her grandpa if she is able to get a wish from the legend himself. The granddaughter texted the golfer on Instagram and is longing for his reply. She posted a screenshot of her message to the golfer that she sent him on social media to increase the chances of getting a reply from Woods.

She gave the letter a nervous start, “Hi Tiger, I know it is highly unlikely you will see this message but I’d give it a go.” She followed this by re-introducing the two of them, rekindling memories from the past. Later, she added, “He turns 80 in September, and I was hoping to organize maybe a birthday card or a letter from you…

After becoming the first ever black PGA Tour professional, Howards got quite a fame of his own. However, one of the most special things that might have happened to him was receiving a signed letter from none other than Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods shows his gratitude in an emotional letter!

In his career of 35 years, Howard met Woods just once and it was Clive Brown who introduced him to the golfer. But just in that one meeting, he enchanted the 15-time major winner with his spark and determination to do something for the colored golf professionals.

According to PGA, on his retirement, a pro-am round was organized for him and afterward a dinner party at his club. The 47-year-old wanted to be there but for some reason, he could not. Instead, he sent a letter and thanked him on behalf of all the people of color in the golf fraternity.

Recalling his retirement moments from 2005, Howard said, “During it, one of the organizers got up and said: ‘There is a special golf pro who would like to have been here tonight but was unable to come. Instead, he has sent a letter.’

It was from Tiger Woods, thanking me on behalf of black people like himself for making it possible to play golf as a professional.

I had a letter from Bob Hope when I first started – I had played with him a couple of times when I was an assistant, and he was in London. And I had a letter from Tiger Woods when I finished.”
