The late Earl Woods has been the most supportive figure in the life of Tiger Woods. He guided his son and taught him to focus on his game. Sr. Woods was the one who wanted his son to reach great heights and always worked in the same direction. However, his demise in 2006 left Woods clueless. He lost his best friend, his staunch supporter, and his teacher.

After his father’s demise left the pro golfer with a void in his heart, he stopped talking to everyone and isolated himself. The major championship winner missed many tournaments because he was still hurt. Losing a father is always painful, but it was beyond that in his case. Earl was not just a father to him but everything. However, did all the hard work by his father would have approved of Woods taking off from golf?

Why was Williams shocked by the decision of Tiger Woods?

Tiger Woods’ former caddie Steve Williams worked with him for over a decade. Together, the duo won 13 major championships. However, after they got separated in 2010, Williams was often asked about his journey with Woods. And everyone wanted to know the golfer a bit better. And a caddie knows a golfer better than anyone. Therefore, he wrote a book, ‘Out of the rough,’ published in 2016. In the book, he mentioned his surprise when the pro golfer denied golfing.

After Earl Woods left the world, his son, the PGA champion, was so hurt that he took off from golf. When he told his caddie, Williams, that he didn’t want to play golf, it surprised him. The pro loved his father and always did whatever his father advised. And Sr. Woods would have never asked his son not to play and only mourned his death. Williams explained his surprise, “He told me there that he was going to take some time off, which I found unusual because it was the opposite of what Earl would have expected. Earl’s tough nature would have insisted Tiger kept playing through whatever difficulty presented itself.”

However, the greatest golfer returned for the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot in June. But according to his former caddie, he was not ready to be on the field. He said, “obvious he was incapable of playing well – his mind wasn’t on golf.” Woods made a mistake directly coming back for an event like the US Open after taking an off. Williams believed he wasn’t ready to play at the level he used to. His game level was nowhere near the level needed to play at a major championship. And it was true.
