Dustin Johnson has been in a major slump ever since his last Masters win in 2020. Last year, Johnson had a string of disappointing major performances, missing the cut at the Masters and U.S. Open, and finishing T43 at the PGA Championship and T31 at The Open. Then, in other leagues this season, Johnson accumulated 13.2 points, placing him 28th in the LIV Golf standings.
And well, it seems like the dark clouds of worries are still hovering over Johnson’s form and they are not going anywhere, anytime soon.
The golfer has missed the cut at the 2025 Masters after scoring 1 over par in the second round. After missing the cut, Johnson took the defeat in stride, acknowledging that he played better than his score suggested. “I’m playing better than I scored for sure,” he said at the Masters presser. He reflected on his final round, saying that he played solidly until the last two holes, but struggled with accuracy off the tee, which made the course particularly challenging. As he noted, “If you drive it in the fairway, it’s not tough. You miss the fairway, it’s difficult.”

Johnson also touched on the momentum factor, recognizing that contending in majors can build confidence. “All it takes is one good round, though, and it’s kind of right back into it,” he said. He emphasized the importance of limiting mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities, particularly with his putting, stating, “Just got to clean up the mistakes a little bit. The game is in good form. Just got to limit the mistakes.” Despite the disappointment of missing the cut, Johnson expressed a desire to return to Augusta, saying, “Yeah, I mean, it’s hard though. Hopefully, the game is in really good form when you pull in.”

But, to many, Johnson missing the cut doesn’t come off as a surprise considering his past major performances and his slumping form in the 2025 season. Oh, and did we mention the gruesome injury?

Dustin Johnson’s career is at an all-time low
Just some weeks ago, Dustin Johnson’s performance begged a revival after scoring a dismal 54 at the LIV event in Hong Kong. The game was negatively impacted by an injury to his rib and his right shoulder. The injury restricted his ability to turn his head, which affected his swing, resulting in consistently hitting the ball left. A week later, Johnson regained enough strength to score a 9 under par at the LIV Golf Singapore event and landed at T5, his best performance so far in the season.
After the comeback, he revealed that he felt something was wrong with his shoulder or rib, affecting his movement and performance. As Johnson noted, “I hit draws all week. It wasn’t very good until Sunday when I could finally move a little better.”

Is Dustin Johnson's career in free fall, or can he stage a legendary comeback?
Have an interesting take?
Johnson’s form improved significantly in Singapore, where he delivered a bogey-free 8-under 63 and took a three-stroke lead over Sebastian Munoz. He credited his Sunday performance to his body loosening up, allowing him to hit the shots he wanted, saying, “I felt like I was swinging good leading into Friday, and then obviously Friday and Saturday, I didn’t swing it that well, but I swung it really nicely on Sunday. It was just, obviously, the body loosened back up, and I could hit the shots that I wanted to.” But the glory did not last for long.
Johnson was again dragged down to T27 with a poor score of 7-over par during LIV Golf Miami, and now he has missed the cut in the first major of the season for the second year in a row. With his current OWGR ranking at 619, concerns about his career trajectory are valid. Can Johnson bounce back from this slump and make a legendary comeback, or is his career on a downward spiral?
