Though the golf world is divided into different circuits, the PGA Tour is arguably the most lucrative. Playing on the PGA Tour is something of a dream for many young golfers. Some people even go above and beyond to keep their PGA Tour cards.

However, circumstances can change, and in this case, the launch of the LIV Golf Series marked the beginning of a trend of quickly switching legacies. Many well-known players joined the Saudi-backed series after leaving their previous circuits, primarily the PGA Tour. Golfers are drawn to LIV Golf mostly because of the extremely massive prizes and flexible schedules. But now, LIV Golf defector Dustin Johnson is beginning to second-guess his choice.

Not a great year for Ryder Cup-snubbed Dustin Johnson

When two-time major champion Dustin Johnson accepted LIV Golf’s $150 million deal, he got severe backlash. Yet, he did well in his new league. He enjoyed a fantastic 2022–2023 season with his team, 4Aces GC, which included a victory in the final event in Miami. Of course, he also received handsome prize money as a result of all those accomplishments.

But recent events seem to indicate that Johnson may now be regretting his choice to leave his previous legacy. First of all, his 4Aces team suffered a major blow as one of the members, Talor Gooch, left the team and joined Bubba Watson‘s RangeGoats GC. And his recent form has not been that strong. The worst, though, was yet to come.

The prestigious Ryder Cup is about to begin. The cup is a matter of absolute pride for any golfer. In 2021, Johnson created history by recording 5-0-0. But this year, partly due to his legacy decision, U.S. captain Zach Johnson didn’t choose him to be a part of the squad. “If I would have been playing on [the PGA Tour], yeah, I would have made the team. Do I think I can help the U.S. team? Absolutely,” said Johnson.

Except for Brooks Koepka, no LIV Golf defector made it to the Ryder Cup team on either side. This also applies to the Ryder Cup veteran, whose very presence caused the US squad to shudder.

Seeking a last-minute redemption proves futile for Sergio Garica

Sergio Garcia, a seasoned Ryder Cup competitor, has a stellar track record. However, similar to Johnson, he was not selected for the European team this year because he switched to LIV Golf and turned in his DP World Tour card in May. For his decision, he was fined $1,22,541.

Though Garcia refused to pay the fine, when it cost him the seat in the 44th Ryder Cup matches, he made some last-minute efforts. He allegedly called the head of the DP World Tour and offered to pay his fine, but there was absolutely no chance that he would make it onto the team.

LIV Golf defectors are now the ultimate prize for leaving their old tours. However, only time will tell whether we’ll see them again at the biennial event in the future. However, based on current accounts, these golfers are not happy about missing out on the Ryder Cup.
