No matter what sport one follows, apparel and gear are a big part of the overall experience. Of course, items promoted by the athletes gain more popularity and are considered must-haves. In golf, few PGA Tour icons like Dustin Johnson often manage to create the required buzz around shoes and other items they put to use.
Often, it is what they wear while playing on the course that catches everyone’s attention.
While at the Genesis Invitational recently, Johnson ended up playing in his new shoes; one’s inspired by Wayne Gretzky.

Dustin Johnson plays the Genesis Invitational in his new Wayne Gretzky-inspired shoes
Johnson, who has previously won at the Genesis Invitational, chose to honor his future father-in-law with his Adidas TOUR360 22 shoes. The shoes had certain modifications made to them that can be seen as tributes to the Los Angeles Kings’ star.

“Once Dustin and Wayne started playing together pretty frequently in pro-ams we always had it in our heads to create something unique that celebrated both of them,” said Masun Denison, global footwear director at Adidas Golf. “The TOUR360 22 provides the perfect canvas for something like this and knowing how much hockey players love to play golf, we know this will be exciting for fans of both sports.”
One change that’s immediately noticeable is Gretzky’s iconic number 99. This number remains legendary in NHL history and is the only one retired by each NHL team. Furthermore, the shoes included three colored stripes to represent the Edmonton Oilers.
During his career, Gretzky won four Stanley Cups with the team. Of course, Johnson’s shoes also featured the initials ‘DJ’ on Thursday. The colorway (navy) is what Johnson often prefers to wear. Adidas will also be selling a matching hat, which will feature the shoes’ colorway and have ’99’ written on the front.
Where can one buy the hat and shoes?
The items will be made available on Adidas’ website and app, along with some shops across the world. The sales will begin on February 25th, with only a limited quantity available.
