Just like Phil Mickelson, Rocco Mediate has also had a fiercest rivalry with Tiger Woods. He has earned the respect of his peers and enjoyed much success in his career.
Mediate joined the crew of the Golf’s Subpar podcast a few hours ago to discuss his career including the famous standoff with Tiger Woods in the 2008 U.S. Open. During this conversation, the topic of the swing setup of every player and how it helps them achieve great results.
That’s when Mediate brought up Mickelson’s opinion on the subject on the podcast. He said, “He (Phil Mickelson) made possibly one of the stupidest comments I’ve heard in my life,” suggesting that the 45x PGAT winner’s opinion was silly. Mediate added, “He said if you set up with your hands even with the ball, you will be a horrible striker of the ball.” What Mickelson stated was that when a golfer is driving the ball, their hands should never be parallel to the ball.
Mediate gave the example of Ben Hogan, who was famous for playing his having his “shafts just behind his belly button.” The Greensburg local suggested that Hogan achieved success and fame positioning the ball under his hands. Mediate definitely has a point considering Hogan achieved the status of one of the GOATs with 62 PGA Tour wins with a hand position that Mickelson believes makes a player “horrible”.
Mediate advised Mickelson “Before you open your mouth, make sure you know what you’re saying,” suggesting that the latter’s comments were ridiculous. The PGA Tour Champions pro also said, “When I saw that comment, I’m like, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard,” berating Mickelson for his opinion.
This is not the first time Mickelson has been criticized for his opinions. He has been in the spotlight a few times for his views about the PGA Tour.
