Can Scottie Scheffler break the FedEx Cup curse, or will history repeat itself yet again?

Are superstitions real? In sports, they are, at least for some people. Now, Scottie Scheffler has to beat them to rewrite 9-year-old history. The top seed from the regular season has succeeded in going to the playoffs. Now that he has made his way to the Playoffs, can he win it as well? The history suggests otherwise.

Well, historically speaking, only a few golfers have achieved the impressive feat of winning the FedEx Cup Playoffs as the No. 1 seed, and two of these notable golfers are Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth Woods. Woods did it in 2007 and 2009, while Spieth, on the other hand, was the last golfer to date to achieve this feat in 2015 after he carded 9 under. So what are the odds that Scheffler can win the coveted title?

Well, Scheffler has been on fire this season and is leading the chart with 5993 points—that’s definitely much more than what his competitors currently have. He is on top of Xander Schaueffle and Rory McIlroy, who are in 2nd and 3rd positions with 4057 and 2545 points, respectively. With six wins and two runner-up finishes, Scheffler has already made an impressive $28.15 million so far this season. But if he wins the Tour Championship, his earnings will skyrocket, as the golfer will get a whopping $25 million out of the $100 million FedExCup Playoffs pool.

The golfer did get into the last two FedEx Cup playoffs as the top seed, only to fall short in both of them. So, could 2024 be Scheffler’s year? Well, maybe. After his incredible performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and on the PGA Tour the fans are starting to believe the odds are in Scheffler’s favor. But are they?

Scottie Scheffler’s last two performances at the FedEx Cup

What’s meant to be, will be, we’re sure you’ve heard this saying before, and maybe it is true, but just not in Scheffler’s case. Despite his remarkable performances at the 2022 and 2023 FedEx Cups, Scheffler has fallen short the past two years. In the 2022 Tour Championship, the golfer delivered a great performance and made a phenomenal score of 20 under par, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for him to secure the trophy, as Rory McIlroy swept in with a jaw-dropping 21 under par and snatched the title, while Scheffler had to tie for the 2nd spot with Sung-Jae Im.

The 2023 Tour Championship also did not go well for Scheffler. The golfer was sanguine with a score of 11 under par, but again, fate was not in Scheffler’s favor, as he lost the trophy by a huge margin. Viktor Hovland scored 27 under to become the champion and stunned everyone with his beautiful win.
