The Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg is hosting the first of the many DP World Tour events, the 2022 Joburg Open. Notably, the Tour is responsible for conducting two events this week; the South African-based event and the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship in Queensland.
Last year, the tournament was cut short to 36 holes due to weather delays and the Covid 19 pandemic. However, the players will get to play all the 72-holes, although a storm caused the officials to halt the event for a while. Before the event gets its champion, let’s find out what he can take home for claiming the title.

The purse of the Joburg Open is ZAR 17,500,000, which is equal to approximately 1 million USD. Like any other European Tour event, a cut is made after the first 36 holes, and only the golfers advancing to the final rounds and successfully finishing them can earn their share of the total purse.
The majority of the prize money share will go to the event champion this week, $165,000. Notably, the European Tour pays out its winner a 16.67 percent payout, according to its prize money distribution chart.
Apart from the prize money, the championship winner will also get to enjoy extra benefits for beating the rest of the players on the field. He will also earn the most of the 2000 Race to Dubai Points and the 1500 Ryder Cup points.

The event also rewards OWGR points, with which players can earn a top spot in the world rankings. Furthermore, the golfer winning the Joburg Open will also get other benefits like 2-year plus exemption on the Tour and berths to many important events like the major championships.

The Open and the Australian PGA Championship are simultaneously being played in two parts of the world. Yet, the Houghton Golf Club field is filled with promising talents this week. Since it is in South Africa, many natives are playing in the event.
