The final stage of the PGA Tour is now drawing close, with the FedEx Cup playoffs right around the corner. Many golfers are hovering over their last chance to secure some points for FedEx this week at the Wyndham Championship and make the cut. And with the fact that the number of players making it to the playoffs has been reduced from 125 to 70, their feat gets even tougher.

With everyone wanting to compete in the endgame of the Tour season, the reduction of the field has left many agitated. And among them is a one-time major champion who recently opened up about her strong desire to make the playoffs!

As the PGA Tour’s season’s end approaches, many players have not been able to gather enough points to secure themselves a spot in the playoffs. Hence, a neck-to-neck competition at the Wyndham Championship, the last stop before the playoffs, is underway. And among the many fighting to make the cut is also Shane Lowry, who currently stands in the 76th position, just 6 spots away from making the cut.

In a recent Twitter post shared by PGA Tour radio, Shane Lowry spoke with Taylor Zarzour about his desire to reach the playoffs after a good opening of 2-under par and a T35 finish in round one. His potential disappointment if he fails to make it to the playoffs is quite evident in his words. “I don’t want to be sitting on the couch next week,” he stated. “I want to be there, I want to play my best and against the best players in the world.”

While talking about his chances of making it to the playoff field, Lowry added, “I think obviously I would prefer if I was in a better spot coming in here, but I’m not. It is what it is now, and I’m going to need a good week this week. Memphis is a course that I like playing, and I’ve played all right in the past, so if I can get there, I know I can make a run there.”

If he manages to enter the FedEx Cup field, this will be Shane Lowry’s fifth consecutive appearance in the playoffs. And the PGA Tour pro is undoubtedly going to be doing everything he can to achieve a good finish at the Wyndham Championship and maintain this streak. However, he does not have an easy road ahead; after all, there are many more who are vying for those spots.

Other PGA Tour pros who cannot afford a slip-up this week

Along with Lowry, a few others have a tough road ahead this week if they want to play next week. Among the many are two big names, Adam Scott and Justin Thomas, who currently have an uncertain FedEx Cup future! Ever since the format came into being, Scott has played in it. However, he has missed cuts in the last two out of his four Tour events and needs a finish towards the top of the leaderboard at the Wyndham Championship to be bumped up above the cutline from his 81st place.

JT, on the other hand, must finish 18th or better this week to grab his place in the playoffs. Irrespective of a strong start this year, he missed the cut at three of the majors and gathered a mere T65 run at the PGA Championship, thus tanking his FedEx standing drastically and leading to his current 79th place in the ranking.

Shane Lowry, compared to the two Tour stars, has only missed three cuts in seventeen starts this season and finished in the top 20 in three of the four majors. With a little push, he may just be able to make it to the playoffs too, instead of spending next week on his couch. Do you think he can get there, though? Tell us in the comments below.
