It has been quite a few months since the PGA Tour has been involved in one controversy after another. It all began with the $3 billion merger and then took a drastic turn with the news of PIP money awardees. Needless to say, dark clouds have been looming over the PGA Tour. Things got exaggerated when Jon Rahm switched to LIV Golf and stated that the primary reason for his switch was to be able to provide better for his family. Some may agree with him, but not Johnson Wagner.
Golf is a sport that rewards excellence, both on and off the course. With lucrative prize money, sponsorship deals, and endorsement opportunities, golfers who play well can earn a fortune. But how do they do it? And is LIV Golf the only way to earn crazy money in golf? Well, according to recent admissions by Wagner, it is not!

But winning is not easy, especially with the level of competition and the unpredictability of the game. Johnson Wagnеr knows this well. Recently, the three-time PGA Tour winner sat down on a podcast called Five Clubs to review the 2023 season along with Gary Williams and Brendon de Jonge.
The 43-year-old defended the PGA Tour and shared his perspective on players, demonstrating a move to the LIV Golf League, too, because of money. With his words, it seemed that Wagner had had enough of the people saying that the PGA Tour does not offer money to its players, and overall, he just seemed frustrated.
The golfer broke down the math and said, “The PGA Tour puts out $8 million purses pretty much every single week.” In a straightforward message, Wagnеr dismissed the notion of waiting for an invitation from LIV Golf. He blatantly suggested that if someone wants more money, all they have to do is just “perform” better. In his words, “If you want a bigger piece of the pie, go out there and perform and earn it; don’t sit there and bi**h.”

From his words, it appeared that Johnson Wagner had a bone to pick with some PGA Tour pros who claimed money to be an issue on America’s prestigious Tour. He pointed out that the players who have stayed on the tour should not make a deal about them not leaving, since “Liv Golf League didn’t want you anyway, so if they had wanted you, they would have paid you, and you could have gone, but they didn’t.”
Offering his suggestion to the players who are on the tour, he urged them to take advantage of the $8 million purses that are offered almost every week. He encouraged the pros to not wait for LIV Golf. In his opinion, money has become a big part of the conversation, and if golfers play well, the money is there on the PGA Tour.
