The infamous scandal of 2009 didn’t just put the life of Tiger Woods in difficulty but affected the lives of his close acquaintances as well. His caddie at the time found the situation more difficult as every media outlet wanted to interview him regarding the matter to get more insider news. However, in reality, he didn’t know a thing.
Steve Williams claimed through his 2015 book, ‘Out of the Rough,’ that he knew nothing about the scandal the golfer was involved in. The ex-caddie described the golfer called him months after the news broke out on the 199th page of the book. He also revealed that despite Woods apologizing to him, Williams didn’t agree with the golfer. And the Tour legend’s then-wife might be the reason for that.

Williams explained in his book that it took months for Woods to call and explain everything to him. “Tiger finally rang me on 23 March,” Williams wrote. “I told him I was sorry to hear what he’d been going through,” he continued. “And he was again apologetic to me.” Notably, the caddie explained that he couldn’t accept the things Woods did and hence, “didn’t have any sympathy for him.”
According to sportscasting.com and other media outlets, Steve Williams carried Woods’ bag from 1999 to 2011. During this period, Williams developed a friendly relationship with Woods’ then-wife and now mother of 4, Elin Nordegren, who got affected the most because of the scandalous news.
“Elin was and is a very good friend. I told him how upset I was about what he had done to Elin and the children,” he wrote. “and then asked him to clear Steve’s name in the media.”

As his long-time caddie, Steve Williams has always been by Woods’ whenever he attended an event. Hence, everyone presumed that he knew everything about the incident beforehand and “frustrated” him by asking hundreds of questions whenever they met him.
Williams wouldn’t have had any issue with Woods if he would have cleared out his caddie’s name from the 2009 incident. However, according to his book released in 2015, the Tour legend didn’t do it to cover up other big names involved in it. “So basically he was covering their bu**s and letting Steve suffer,” he added. Later, Woods fired Williams in 2011 without stating the reason.
