Sometimes, all it takes is one moment to shift everything—either it makes you or breaks you. For Justin Thomas, that moment came when he faced a skin cancer scare, and it shifted the entire trajectory of his life. If you’ve been following him, you might know that he even launched his own sunscreen brand, WearSPF, during Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month.
WearSPF is deeply personal for Thomas. As he put it, “My scare with melanoma was a real wake-up call for me and why I decided to partner with veteran consumer goods managers to launch WearSPF.” The brand isn’t just a product; it’s a message in a bottle, encouraging everyone to apply, reapply, and go get checked.
As a pro golfer, Thomas has always embraced the grind—the practice, the tournaments, the long hours in the sun. Those sunny days have led to some incredible achievements but in 2019, a visit to the dermatologist revealed something unsettling—a mole on his calf that turned out to be melanoma. Luckily, it was caught early and surgically removed, leaving him with a scar and a reminder of just how serious skin cancer can be. And that’s how WearSPF was born.

Recently, the WearSPF Instagram page shared a video of Thomas spraying sunscreen on his arms, which he reshared on his story with the caption: “Don’t forget your sunscreen, kids… (well, adults too).” It’s a simple nudge, but a powerful one, indeed.

“You’ve got nothing to lose and possibly everything to gain. It’s time to raise your sun protection game,” says Thomas. And he’s not just talking the talk—WearSPF is here to make it easier for you to protect your skin without breaking the bank.
Thomas’s goal is simple: raise awareness about the importance of sunscreen and regular skin checks. As he puts it, “When it comes to the health of you and your loved ones, you’ll never regret taking extra precautions.” And with WearSPF, he’s making it easier than ever to do just that.

Thomas’ advice isn’t just for fans
Justin Thomas isn’t the only golfer who’s had a close call with skin cancer. PGA Tour pro Harry Higgs also had his scare, catching a spot early thanks to his dermatologist. After a quick procedure to remove it, he was left with a scar—but it was a serious wake-up call.
“It was not a threat to my health but had to be cut off the side of my head,” Higgs explained, adding that sunscreen has become a must in his routine since. And Thomas was right there, offering some advice. “I know uh Justin Thomas reached out shortly thereafter I think I did Smiley Show and he might have seen it,” Higgs recalled and Thomas told him the same thing his dermatologist said—the sun is the real risk.

As the guy behind WearSPF, Thomas understands how important sun protection is. His own run-in with melanoma really pushed him to create the brand, hoping to spread the word and keep others safe. With so many golfers like Camillo Villegas and Stewart Cink dealing with skin cancer, it’s clear—protecting yourself from the sun isn’t something you can skip.
