Does John Daly's support for Trump make you respect him more or question his judgment?

For the second year in a row, the PGA Senior Championship will be played at Donald Trump’s course, Aberdeen. The former president was delighted to host the veterans again and sent a special message to the field and the CEO of PGA of America, with a special shout-out to his best buddy, John Daly.

In a recent Instagram video posted by Trump International, the former POTUS opined how he wanted to join the pros at Aberdeen, but because of the presidential campaign, he couldn’t make the run. However, he promised to talk to the winner when the tournament ends. And while he was naming the field, the former POTUS has anything but admiration for Daly. He appreciated the 2-time major winner’s skill to hit long and said, “Big John Daly, my friend. He still hits it about 360,” wishing him luck on the Aberdeen greens.

The 2-time major winner was also extremely excited to tee up at Trump Aberdeen, as he once said that the reason he was playing in the tournament was because “everything Trump does is first class when it comes to golf. His courses are just immaculate.” The PGA Senior Championship has started on the Aberdeen course, and who knows, maybe luck will favor Daly on the links golf course.

Long John last played at Royal Troon, carding 11 over 82 in the opening round. He withdrew on Friday. This will be his second start on a links course in recent weeks, and making it all the more memorable is that it is Trump’s course-a man he’s always stood by including recently when he openly declared that the Trump’s Turnberry course deserved major status.

John Daly dubs Turnberry worthy of The Open

Turnberry has seen some good, bad, and historic days. But in this era, the magnificent course was ripped apart as the R&A took it out of the Open Championship ROTA. The reason, you ask? Well, it has a lot to do with Donald Trump taking over it in 2014. R&A chief, Martin Slumber released a statement in 2021 that said the major could no longer be hosted there, due to security issues. “We will not return until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players, and the course itself and we do not believe that is achievable in the current circumstances.”

Since then, many golfers have opened up and defended the course, urging the organization to reconsider. The course has seen many big stars (both old and new) play on its greens before the 152nd Open, from Gary Player to Scottie Scheffler. And as per his statemtn, Daly too wants to be on that list.

Just days ago the golf pro voiced his support for the 45th president and said, “I want to play Turnberry as Tom Watson said it would be one of the best British Opens of all time, if not the best if they went back there.” Sadly, it may be in vain. The R&A’s spokesperson rejected Turnberry’s general manager, Nic Odham, request to make it a major host once against and relayed that there was “no change” in their previous stance.

It seems like John Daly may have to settle for playing alongside Trump at Turnberry rather than a major he won decades ago. Not too bad a consolation prize though, is it?
