Greg Norman has made numerous enemies in the golf world over the years. With his blunt and straightforward responses and opinions, the legend has very few people supporting him. Out of all, one of his biggest rivals is PGA Tour loyalist, Rory McIlroy. The two have been in several controversies standing tall against each other. However, there was a time when Norman had some essential advice for the Irishman.
Greg Norman gave Rory McIlroy the ultimate reality check
Ever since he joined LIV Golf, Norman has been on the hunt to get the most talented players to join his league. And despite the huge transition of players towards the Saudi circuit, Rory McIlroy and a few others decided to stick to the PGA Tour. A great friend to Tiger Woods, the golf star was very disappointed with everyone who turned their backs on the tour.

McIlroy even made numerous statements about LIV Golf players and the Shark himself. He even said that Norman should quit the role as the league’s CEO. While Norman always had great support for players no matter where they came from. There was a time when the retired professional golfer analyzed McIlroy’s game on TV. And based on his analysis, Norman explained what was wrong with the Northern Irish athlete’s playing style.
In an interview with SunSport in 2018, Norman admitted finding out about McIlroy’s claim to be “extremely disappointed” in case he didn’t win any more majors. But according to the legend, Rory’s chances of winning were decreasing with his moving age!
“When you do win Majors you feel like you have the right to win more,” Norman said. “But the older you get, the younger the younger players are, and those younger players are gunning for those same championships in a totally carefree and illusive fashion than someone like Rory…” Well, the golf ace wasn’t wrong as it is actually hard to win championships at an older age.

Norman also used his own example from the Masters and US PGA, which he wanted to win. But he failed, and it became even more difficult for him the next time! Putting forward his analysis from watching McIlroy’s game on TV, Norman said, “…his swing and his shot direction are fair but his putting is his Achilles’ heel…”

The course designer added, ”he’s doing wrong with his putting, but he keeps on doing the same things when he gets under pressure.” According to Norman, the golfer needed someone to “put the right key in the door for him”. He also said that these were the only things that hindered the game for McIlroy. Otherwise, he had a commendable swing and used to hit really good shots.

McIlroy’s current relationship with Norman is extremely messed up. But fans would still agree that Norman has mostly had the golf star’s best interests in his head. But due to the whole LIV Golf vs PGA Tour scenario, the two might not be able seen together for a long time!
