Did Scottie Scheffler make the right call prioritizing family over the PGA Tour? What's your take?

Scottie Scheffler ticked almost all the boxes this year. One major, an Olympic gold medal, big wins at the Signature events—there is not much you could ask that he hasn’t done. However,  some even predicted him to sweep the majors. If not that, perhaps win at least two like Xander Schauffele. That hasn’t happened and even Scheffler accepted a few things that didn’t go his way.

Between the Masters and the PGA Championship, the world no. 1 played only one tournament, taking a break to stay with his wife, Meredith. The Texas resident tied for 8th. But from his words, it was evident that Scheffler felt it could’ve been better if he could add a few tournaments in between.

The two-time Masters champion said from East Lake, “There’s two majors where I took long breaks going into, one because of the birth of our child. We had a long break going into the PGA. And then one because of the Olympics, I had a linger (sic!) break going into The Open Championship.

Surprisingly, Scottie Scheffler skipped the Genesis Scottish Open before heading to Royal Troon for the last major. That was a bold decision considering many used it to acclimatize with the links golf and the sea wind at Royal Troon a week later. The World No. 1 instead chose to practice at Trump Turnberry before the Open.

Scheffler admits he wasn’t sure “whether or not we could take our son or not take our son.” They figured at the start of the year that it would be ‘challenging’ to travel with a month-old Bennett to Europe.  “You never really know what a baby is going to be like,” Scheffler added.

So a few things were thrown into uncertainty because of Bennett’s arrival, however, as a new father, that was expected to happen. And Scheffler doesn’t regret spending time with family. Nevertheless, the U.S. Open prep work could’ve been better. But it wasn’t or rather couldn’t happen, due to a PGA Tour scheduling conflict.

Scottie Scheffler doesn’t want to play before the U.S. Open week

Have an interesting take?

Scottie Scheffler pretty strongly disapproved of the memorial getting pushed to the week before the U.S. Open. However, since it was a Signature event and Jack Nicklaus hosted one at that, Scheffler couldn’t skip it.

At that time, the two-time major champion spoke about how difficult a test Muirfield village was. Now at the Tour Championship, Scheffler once again reiterated, “[I] played Memorial the week before the U.S. Open, and Memorial is basically as close to a U.S. Open test as we see on TOUR, and I think it kind of wore me down going into that major championship.

Except for the three missed cuts, the T41 at this year’s U.S. Open is the worst major finish of his career. The good news for him is that the Tour has moved the tournament to Memorial Week next year. And, Scottie Scheffler, too, wants to look only forward. “As far as prep work for the major tournaments, I think I have a better idea of what I want to do going forward,” the two-time major winner added. Scottie Scheffler will once again pair up with Xander Schauffele at East Lake. The world no. 1 and world no. 2 tee off at 2 PM EDT on Thursday.tu
