Does Tyrrell Hatton owe his success to his father's coaching, or is it all his own talent?

With 6 wins in the DP World Tour and two Ryder Cup victories, Tyrrell Hatton has achieved a lot of accolades in his 13 years as a pro. There is no doubt that he is regarded as one of the more accomplished golfers in the world. Especially, out of 4 of his 6 DP World wins, were against some of the very best in the Rolex Series.

What makes Tyrrell even more special is that he does not shy away from being blunt in his speech. He has always been vocal about the sport and many intricate aspects of it. He had even made a complaint about the sluggish greens of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship course. His opinions are justified considering that he has dedicated (literally) 90% of his life to golf.

Did you know that Tyrrell Hatton has been playing golf since the wee age of 3? Many were under the impression that the boy was too young to indulge in a sport like golf. However, his father, Jeff Hatton, didn’t think so as he was a professional golfer before. Hatton Sr’s dedication to teaching his son helped encourage Tyrrell to take up golf at an early age. Even with such a prolific career, one would wonder if Tyrrell still goes to his father for tips and advice.

Jeff Hatton’s contribution to his son’s career

In an interview for the Telegraph, Jeff Hatton shared his journey about coaching his son for the professional circuit. He said, “Tyrrell got me into coaching, no doubt about it. I discovered a love of teaching through him.” He further added, “He’s my son, but I owe a lot to him. His talent and drive have taken us a long way.” Jeff Hatton admitted that he enjoyed coaching his son a lot more than playing the sport himself.

Speaking of his son’s skills and abilities, he confessed that Tyrrell Hatton showed early signs of excellence. “Tyrrell beat me off gross when he was six. It wasn’t even a pitch-and-putt course either. It was a nine-hole with par-fours.” as told by Jeff Hatton. So it didn’t come as a surprise to him when Tyrrell Hatton proved himself by winning the Wycombe Heights Junior Masters.

However, Jeff had started to notice a change in his coaching ways ever since his son Tyrrell became a pro. Jeff Hatton explained how coaching his son is not the same as it used to be during his youth years. On his website, the father of the talented golfer admitted that coaching his son now is only about swing maintenance. He believes that Tyrrell developed great technique during his youth and he only needs to make sure that his flow doesn’t catch any rust. Tyrell Hatton admits that the only changes that he experiences these days are the minor modifications in his equipment to improve his gameplay.

He further stated that it was his son’s determination that helped him achieve so much success in his career. So Tyrrell Hatton deserves a lot more credit for his accomplishments as he continues to overcome major obstacles in golf.

Tyrrell Hatton was left with his mouth wide open, shocked by the brilliant putt from quite a long distance by his father.

At present, the duo are sitting pretty at T7 in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
