A fashion statement is like any other statement. It can be good, but it can also rub you the wrong way. But it is a statement nevertheless because it makes you turn your head. There is no denying that Jason Day has turned heads ever since he started wearing Malbon Golf clothes, a modern brand that likes to break the mold, to say the least.
Their unique style seems to be a blend of golf and streetwear, two worlds that have never intersected, until now. The brand definitely has found success, with collaboration with various household names like Nike to create some interesting pieces that have raised eyebrows in the world of golf. But who is behind this new wave in golf fashion?

To put it simply, no. Day is just an ambassador. “Fashion industry changes over time“, said Day in an exclusive clip on Malbon Golf’s official YouTube channel. And that certainly seems to be the objective for brands like Malbon with their unique designs and eye-catching styles. But actually, there is a mastermind couple behind this disruptor in golf fashion.
Stephen and Erica Malbon created the brand in 2017. One look at their website will speak volumes about what they are trying to achieve. Everything from their models to their apparel screams unconventionality, but it all seems to be just elegant enough. And disruptions are a rarity in a sport as steeped in tradition as golf. However, Malbon Golf must have something figured out for Day to leave his $100 million partnership with Nike and join the bandwagon. After all, it is also reported that they have poached ex-Nike bigwig Aaron Heiser. He was at the helm for Nike for 18 years, serving as their Global Vice President of apparel, accessories, and licensing, amongst his various other responsibilities. But being different certainly comes at a cost per day for Day.

The world of golf reacts to Jason Day’s fashion choices
It will come as no surprise that the Australian has caught the ire of fans and officials alike. And not for the right reasons. During the 2024 Masters, Day was asked to remove his vest by the ANGC officials because of the amount of attention it was catching. It is also said that he was chastised by many fans online for each of his outfits. His 313 t-shirt at the Australia National also caught eyeballs, to say the least. He also wore a striking all-white tracksuit with oversized Malbon Golf logos at the 152nd Open Championship.

There was also the all-green outfit that he wore at the PGA Championship which made fans compare it to the scrubs of a dental hygienist. However, Day doesn’t seem to mind the attention. Au contraire, he likes the fact that his apparel sets him apart during tournaments. “There have been times that I’d be standing on the first tee and look over to see another golfer in essentially the same outfit as me,” said Day in an interview.
