How would you describe Jon Rahm‘s current situation? He got a hefty amount to join the Saudi-backed league and even won the season’s Individual Championship but his chances of making the 2025 Ryder Cup team appear slim since he hasn’t competed in any DP World Tour events this year. Nine months ago, Rory McIlroy said that the 2025 Ryder Cup qualification criteria need to change to include Rahm, but another European pro, a Cup veteran, Justin Rose seems to think otherwise.
Ahead of the first round of the BMW PGA Championship Rose joined the Press conference and was asked about his thoughts on the possibility of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton not being part of the 2025 Ryder Cup. As a response, he said, “Well, there’s a possibility, yeah.” What’s the solution then? Rose gave his 7-word verdict, “But there’s quite a simple pathway for them.” He further talked about how if Rahm follows the rule things might change and said: “So I don’t think — it’s going to come down to their own personal decisions, I think, but I think if they choose to cooperate or go with the structure that’s in place, they’ll absolutely be on the team.”
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy had said “Jon is going to be in Bethpage in 2025 so, because of this decision, the tour are going to have to rewrite the rules for Ryder Cup eligibility, absolutely,” as per the Guardian. However, there are no reports of any changes in the rule instead it says “To be eligible for the Ryder Cup, a player must play in a minimum of four DP World Tour events.”

Justin Rose turned pro back in 1998 and has had six Ryder Cup appearances. Starting with 2008, Valhalla Golf Club, where Team USA claimed victory under Paul Azinger as captain. However, his appearances aren’t consecutive, as the golfer didn’t play in 2010 and 2021. Just like Rose, the DP World Tour Chief Executive Guy Kinnings believes that Rahm would be eligible as long as he meets the conditions and follows the rules.

“The reality is that, under the current system, if a player is European and is a member of the DP World Tour and abides by the rules in place, he is eligible,” said Kinnings. However, after the BMW PGA Championship, there are only a few events left on the DPWT for Jon Rahm to compete in, and with the way things are, he might get a chance to compete.
Jon Rahm’s Ryder Cup woes get relief?
The European Tour had fined Jon Rahm and others over $1 million, and the Chief Executive was also adamant of it and had said that the LIV Golfers who have maintained their membership must accept the penalties to be eligible for the tournament. On the other hand, the Spaniard had no plan of paying the fines and said, “I’m not a big fan of the fines” and was looking forward to working that out with the Tour officials. And guess what? It’s working in his favor.

Rory McIlroy's empathy for Jon Rahm—Is he too soft on the unpaid fines issue?
Have an interesting take?
Yes, you read it right. Recently Flushing It Golf shared a post on X captioning “Jon Rahm has officially appealed against his sanctions on the DP World Tour. This means he is now eligible to compete in the Spanish Open and any other events needed to maintain membership of the tour and be eligible for Ryder Cup selection in 2025.” Although Jon Rahm hasn’t said anything about competing in the rest of the DPWT events, this certainly increases his chances.
