Jin Young Ko will be at the CME Group Tour Championship to defend her 2021 title, albeit with an injury. The 27-year-old was plagued with a wrist injury towards the end of the season, forcing her to play against the pain barrier. However, it is nothing new for Ko, who battled the same injury to work her way toward a heroic victory last year.

Why is Jin Young Ko playing with an injury?

Ko was at hand to give an impression of her injuries ahead of the CME Group Tour Championship. “It’s ok, but not good,” was Ko’s answer when asked about the state of her injury. She is suffering from a wrist injury which has hampered her game during the latter part of this season.

The battle with the wrist started in August when she took a sabbatical after missing consecutive cuts for the first time in her career. She took off seven months from her Tour schedule to recover fully from a repetitive-motion injury in her left wrist. However, there was never enough time to heal, which left Ko playing through pain.

But why is she forcing herself into such a tight spot? “I just want to know what problems are in my game right now,” she explained. “I was debating whether I should go back to the States or not to play the last two tournaments until I got on the plane.”

Ko also spoke about how the injury could be a blessing in disguise. “Even though I am having a hard time right now, the two events will make me stronger. I have to feel something from this pain and my difficult situation,” she said.

How has Ko played since her partial return from injury?

However, it hasn’t been a happy return for Ko. She made her comeback at the BMW Ladies Championship but withdrew after a terrible performance. The former World No. 1 shot rounds of 80 and 79 before calling it quits at the Oak Valley Country Club. She wasn’t great at her last event on the Pelican Women’s Championship either, posting 3-over par in the first two rounds to miss the cut.

Yet, Ko will make a familiar trip to the Tiburon Golf Club this weekend. Her last two outings at the course have been successful ones, with victories in the HSBC Women’s World Championship as well as in last year’s CME Group Tour Championship.

But will history repeat itself at the Tiburon? The CME Group Tour Championship commences on November 17.
