This year’s Genesis Open has been a closely watched affair. While fans tuned in for last week’s WM Phoenix Open due to its unnatural fervor, the headlining debut of one man has got fans glued to their TV screens. 884 days since we last saw him on the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods is back, with a bang. But is it enough to secure his place for the weekend?
How has Woods fared at the Genesis Open?
Registering a birdie on his return to PGA Tour action, Woods looked fairly comfortable on Thursday. A score of 2-under par meant he sat beside the table-toppers in the preliminary rankings.

Despite weathering cold conditions at the Riviera Golf Course, the 47-year-old delighted his legion of fans with exceptional stroke play. Woods sported a steely determination on the course, which evidently proves his earlier remark about chasing the title.
At the end of the second round, Woods shot three-over par, a stroke more than his score in the first round. This was despite his strong play in the earlier rounds on Friday, where he nearly made two incredible hole-in-ones on par-3s.
Overall, Woods finishes with a one-over-par, but is it enough to secure a weekend of action for him?
Is Tiger Woods safe from the drop?
Will Woods’ score keep him alive at the Genesis Open? While the official confirmation will take place later, the answer could be up in the air.
Indeed, his under-par score should be more than the cut line imposed at the tournament. Several golfers have deemed the conditions to be strenuous, which is evident from the low scores across the two rounds.
But according to Data Golf, a website that specializes in data around golf, Woods has an 81.1% chance of making it to the third round. The figure stems from the 15-time major championship winner’s negative score alongside the overall field’s tally.
But while Woods could play his part on Saturday, he’s nowhere close to the leading men after his average performance in the second round. Will the legendary golfer turn the tide and stick to his word on winning the Genesis Open title? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
