It was 2006 The Open taking place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake when Tiger Woods emerged victorious for the third time in one of the toughest test golf has to offer. The 2006 win was the second consecutive win of the 5-time Masters Champion. Sadly, the Golf Hall of Famer is not competing in the 2023 Open Championship because of his persistent health issues. He also withdrew from the Masters, and did not compete in the other two majors, US Open and PGA Championship.

Despite not being one of the players on the tournament’s field at Liverpool, the legendary golfer is still a part of the tournament. How you may ask? Well, one of the Woods’ namesakes, Tiger Christensen is an amateur golfer and is currently in the lead as an amateur golfer and made his way through 36-hole final qualifying. The amateur golfer hails from Germany and currently is studying at the University of Arizona.

According to Golf Digest ME, when Christensen was asked about the 82-time PGA Tour winner, he said,  “I would love to see the ‘old’ Tiger in the field but to get one Tiger in the field is pretty cool.” Talking about how he feels that he is participating in the major tournament, he said, “It’s pretty special to be here. It’s just sinking in.”

It appears that Tiger Christensen is not the only leading amateur in the field before the official four days of the competition begin at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. There is one more South African amateur golfer who is rocking the field.

Christo Lamprecht who hails from George, South Africa stood out amongst the 156 players at the 151st The Open. He is currently leading the six-strong amateur contingent at Royal Liverpool. The 22-year-old especially caught the eye of Bryson DeChambeau by hitting at the speed of 192 mph in the windy conditions in Hoylake.

Apart from being in the lead for the six-strong amateur contingent, the 22-year-old Lamprecht is also likely the tallest player to compete in The Open. He is 6ft8 inches tall.
