A competition in golf doesn’t get more dramatic than this. From a humiliating start at the Ryder Cup by the Americans and a chance at redemption on Sunday to on and off-course tussle between opposition teams, the event has seen it all. But what caught the golf world’s attention on Saturday was the altercation between Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay‘s caddie, Joe LaCava.
The story from Saturday’s events does not portray the looper in a good light by the Luke Donald-led squad. Nevertheless, a resurfaced story about the bagman has gone ahead to paint him in a different light among the golfing community, calling him nothing short of a ‘Real Hero’!

McIlroy and Lacava got into a slight tussle as the latter was accused of infringing upon McIlroy’s playing space. Although the heated debate does not put the caddie in a favorable situation amongst many fans, one can’t help but think differently of the bagman after hearing a certain story from Michael Bamberger, a golf writer.
The reporter once recounted special memories of the 68-year-old after he was inducted into the caddie Hall of Fame in 2019. Among them was a certain mention of how the writer and the bagman were walking off a course together at a senior event in Savannah around 2009. Enter a decades-old caddie friend of LaCava’s who was very old-school and “not in a good way.”
Bamberger talked about how the guy was talking about whatever came to his mind and was “right on the verge of saying something demeaning of Jewish women.” But, he stopped short when the ex-caddie of Tiger Woods shot the old-timer a look. Well, the looper is a true hero, isn’t he, standing up for others in such situations.?
The reporter also pointed out that there are a hundred stories about him like that. Nevertheless, the current situation proves to be a very different one for the looper.
The McIlroy-LaCava tiff
During the 18th hole on Saturday, the pair consisting of the Northern Irishman and Matt Fitzpatrick went ahead and missed their putts to tie the hole leading to their loss in the match. While the former was taking the shot, Cantlay’s bagman was seen stepping across the line of the putt while waving his own cap in the air.

This led to a heated debate on the course followed by an altercation in the parking lot. As McIlroy continued to vent his frustration at the looper, Justin Thomas‘ caddie, Jim ‘Bones’ McKay, tried to diffuse the situation as he appeared to talk with ‘Rors’ at the parking space.
The former did not stop as he continued to shout at someone outside the club, presumably LaCava. Nevertheless, teammate Shane Lowry was able to pull him towards a waiting car as he intervened to stop the situation from escalating.
