Debates, discussions, and verdicts are part of the golf community, just like any other sport. Oft-times, a topic soars from the flames ignited by a spark of curiosity on the internet, and it takes no time for the users to chime in with a resolution. Something similar happened to the golf dynamics recently. Coincidentally, it featured none other than the ongoing Open Championship!

Currently, the 151st edition of the oldest golf tournament in the world is underway at Hoylake, England. While golf athletes are vying on the competitive field for this distinguished title, golf enthusiasts online have delivered a clear ruling on the best major of the game. And astonishingly, it does not focus on the Augusta Masters or the US Open, which are usually fan favorites. Rather, it is all praise for the fourth golf major. Let us dive in and find out the reasons behind this settlement!

It so happened earlier today that a Reddit users—alejandroacantilado—took to the platform to provide extensive reasoning behind the British Open being hands-down the best major. He opened his disclosure by firmly stating that qualities like oldest and most prestigious are not grounds for the same. Instead, he put forth three extremely significant aspects of the game as his favorites for the Open.

These included the gameplay, the strategy, and the links golf! The account expressed that the Open Championship allows room for players to shape shots, scramble, and get creative, unlike other golf majors. According to him, those are mostly dominated by prominent players. His explanation further took refuge in the comparisons between champions of the US Open, the PGA Championship, and The Open.

Per the fan, the PGA Championship, like the US Open, usually finds its winner in the longest hitters. Referencing Zach Johnson and Jordan Spieth, he said that one cannot imagine short hitters executing their gameplay well in tournaments other than the Open unless they are welcomed by windy weather or link-like courses.

Zipping back to the present $16.5 million tournament, the golf fanatic put the leaderboard under the spotlight. He elucidated how the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Stewart Cink, and Brian Harman have been able to control trajectory, shape drives, and put from 40 yards. This appealed to the fan as something awesome.

Other reasons behind crowning the Open as the best golf major

The other two reasons that found their way into the golf fan’s judgment were the R&A for its flexibility and for letting the course decide the difficulty, and the European audience. With regard to the first, he believed the courses were more natural. There was no aesthetic dyeing of the water, raking of the pine straws, or fake bird songs. In lieu, it embraced the sustainable and natural style of golf, which was admirable.

Moreover, the Reddit handle believed the audience at the Open to be “the best of all majors“. They pleased the user through their knowledge and enthusiasm. As the post concluded, other Redditors were also quick to claim the same. Though the words were presented differently, the overall result of crowning the British Open as the best golf major was the same.

Redditors unanimously sing the praises of the Open Championship and European courses

As soon as the in-depth post that voiced a strong opinion went up, it attracted massive attention from other users. Most of them resonated with the golf admirer’s views. They said:

“Golf as it should be”

“It’s my favorite too. Get to see such a wide variety of shots”

“The Open is the best championship because links golf is the best way to play golf”

Those who focused more on the course and the challenge it provides commented: “I was at Royal Port Rush in Ireland 2019. You are 100% correct. The course was amazing and the people made the experience phenomenal. The best golf venue”, and “Love the links“.

Another added, “Agree with everything you say. It’s the ultimate and purest test of golf. I hope it never becomes Americanised,” “Couldn’t agree more! It’s been fascinating to watch and I look forward to the weekend. Scores aren’t safe – just ask Hatton.”
