The Open Championship is one of the most well-regarded and anticipated events in the golfing community. Despite the conflicting interests among the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf, the Major Championship is a place where golfers come together for an elite experience of fine gameplay. Phil Mickelson left behind a legacy at the Open Championship. Although the Pro golfer is now on the LIV Golf roster and appears to be quite excited about the limited tournaments, fans are clamoring to know if ‘Lefty’ will make an appearance at the 2023 Open Championship to reclaim his title at the decade marker.

Did Phil Mickelson qualify for the Open Championship?

Mickelson is a legend in the golfing community. With 6 Major wins: 2 PGA Championship wins, 3 wins at the Masters, and an impeccable performance over the years that included an Open Championship title in 2013, he is a strong contender for Royal Liverpool.

There are several factors that determine the qualification of golfers in the Open Championship each year. The 3-time Masters winner meets at least three of those criteria.

  • He is one of the 10 winners of the Open Championship (2013) in the last 10 years.
  • He is still below the age of 60.
  • He won the PGA Championship in 2021.

That makes Mickelson a contender for the Open Championship 2023 at Royal Liverpool starting on July 20th. The Open field already added the hopefully-returning champion on their roster along with several other top contenders including Wyndham Clark, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and 152 others.

Mickelson missed the cut in last year’s Major. Fans are waiting to see the 53-year-old golfer among his former buddies from the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and some of his LIV Golf comrades as well, including Brooks Koepka in the 151st Open Championship. He is one of those golfers who is very likely to win the title, defying age and everything else.

Mickelson is constantly amid scrutiny

Mickelson was a prodigy in the sport even before he entered the cosmos of Professional golf. He has amassed a significant fan following along with his massive net worth and numerous accolades over the years.

However, since he defected to LIV Golf, the 3-times Masters winner has faced a lot of backlash from PGA Tour loyalists. Although his die-hard fans did not choose sides, they are left to wonder if Mickelson will attend the Open Championship amid the controversy. He did say how happy he is to play 54 instead of 72 holes since joining LIV Golf. He also faced a lot of judgment upon missing the cut in the US Open 2023.

The golfing world is hoping that Lefty will make an appearance and hopefully reclaim his title, even if it is 10 years later.
