Despite $62 million in earnings, does Scottie Scheffler still have something to prove at the Presidents Cup?

7 wins plus a gold medal at the Paris Olympics and millions in earnings—there is no doubt that Scottie Scheffler has merited his world no. 1 status this year with his stellar performances on the links. To put this into context, only players in the history of golf have earned more than his earnings this year. He has earned more money than all the bottom 142 players on the PGA Tour money list… combined. This is the highest-earning season in PGA Tour history, and standing at $62 million, Scheffler has banked approx. two times more than the next-highest earner on the PGA Tour (Xander Schauffele, $29.3 million). The numbers involving Scottie Scheffler are staggering, to say the least.

However, with the 2024 President’s Cup coming up, the 28-year-old will remember his performance in the 2022 edition of the tournament, but not for good reasons. Scheffler was a big favorite coming into the tournament. But unfortunately, Colombian Sebastian Muñoz got the better of him. With three birdies (one shot under par) and an eagle (two shots under par), Muñoz beat the Scheffler 2-1 and won the applause of those attending. So what can we expect from him in the 2024 Presidents Cup?

Scottie Scheffler will undoubtedly be the one to keep an eye out for the international team. The American team boasts other notable pros, with captain Jim Furyk being forced to make some tough decisions. The most notable absentee was Justin Thomas, who will not compete in the tournament for the first time since 2016. Thomas has an impressive 10-3-2 record in the competition but still couldn’t make the cut for the showcase event to be held at Royal Montreal. Explaining his decision, Furyk said that the situation with Thomas was a difficult call to make, but ultimately it boiled down to “(sic) put the best 12 guys together” for the tournament.

International team captain Mike Weir also makes some brutal calls, with the likes of Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin missing out on a spot. Canadians Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, and Mackenzie Hughes made the cut, along with the likes of Si Woo Kim of South Korea, Min Woo Lee of Australia, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout of South Africa. The decision took its toll on Weir, who was evidently emotional while explaining his decision.

I respect those guys, I love those guys. They’re like brothers, they’re Canadians,” said a teary-eyed Weir. He also admitted making such calls is “the toughest part of being a captain.
