Even with Scheffler's win, does Tiger Woods still cast the longest shadow in golf?

“Once a legend, always indeed a legend.” When it comes to golf, the statement can only resonate with Tiger Woods. Although the 48 YO could not make it to the FedEx Cup Playoffs since 2014, he still boasts of having one of the best records in the world. Woods has been struggling to keep it together ever since his life-altering accident in 2021. He has dropped to 969 on the OWGR list, and 223 on the FedEx Cup standings.

However, the records that he has made, remain unbeatable. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler beat his record of earning 532 OWGR points (2000) and bagged a whopping 583 points, but when it comes to annual earnings, he is nowhere close to Mr.T!

Nosferatu, a golf page, took to their official X account and shared statistics of the top 11 players who have earned the highest number of OWGR points throughout the season. Although the list has eleven spots, only five players are on it, Woods enjoys multiple spots on the list. He bagged 950 points back in 2000. He has a grip on all the top positions.

Following him in the fifth position is Vijay Singh’s record in 2004, as he earned a few more than 700 points that year. Scottie Scheffler comes in the sixth position with close to 700 points, ahead of Tiger Woods’ fifth-highest score in 2007. They barely have any difference in the record earned. Jordan Spieth (9) and Rory McIlroy (11) also stand on the list.

Only the top 70 players qualify to be a part of the field of the first event of the FedEx Cup standings (St. Jude Championship), which is the first stepping milestone to grabbing the Player of the Year title. Due to Woods’ current standing, he could not make it to the field even this year. However, had it not been for the current World No. 3, he still holds a record at the playoffs too.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are the only players who have bagged the title of Player of the Year more than once. After winning the inaugural season, it was Woods who bagged the $10 million bonus with a record-setting performance at the Tour Championship. He then, once again went on to bag another win in the playoffs, after letting Vijay Singh grab the trophy in 2008. Woods’ second victory came in 2009.

Until 2019, he was tied with Rory McIlroy with the highest number of wins at the FedEx Playoffs. However, after McIlroy bagged his third win back in 2022, Tiger Woods ranks as the second player to have earned the title the highest number of times.
