Amidst the sweltering heat that had players, caddies, and fans dripping with sweat, one British golfer stood out. Effortlessly scoring a 66 in the third round, the PGA Tour is undoubtedly embracing the heat and relishing the heat. In fact, as per him, it’s “better out there” than at other courses!
PGA Tour pro embraces and excels in the heat at the FedEx St. Jude Championship
Tommy Fleetwood, originally from Southport, England, now calls the sun-soaked city of Dubai his home. Hence, in Memphis, even with its immense warmth, he was more than comfortable. In fact, on Friday, he even opened up about how the scorching heat in Memphis was a much better condition to play in than the gusting winds that the golf veterans faced at the recent Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl.
The Welsh course is famous for its scenic beauty, but the windy weather often poses a challenge for golfers. During the Senior Open Championship there, the cold was paired with strong winds, reaching up to 50 miles per hour, giving the pros a tough time. Reflecting on this, a Fleetwood commented, “It’s better out there today than playing in 50-mile-an-hour winds at Royal Porthcawl like they had recently for the Seniors Open. It’s easier than that.”

Yet, Memphis’ conditions posed unique challenges. Managing energy levels was crucial, especially with the sweaty grips and the crucial need to stay hydrated, pushing players’ physical and mental capacities to the limits.
At the FedEx Championship 2023, Tommy Fleetwood showcased his skills with a notable performance. He scored 66 in the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship and is now in third place, behind Lucas Glover and Taylor Moore. He’s shown great precision and control, making only four bogeys over the span of 54 holes for a combined score of 198.

The intense heat tested many players’ patience, including overnight leader Jordan Spieth. He vented his frustration by kicking his driver after an off-target tee shot during the second round. With a score of two-under 68, Spieth slipped to second place at nine-under. Meanwhile, Fleetwood remained composed throughout, showcasing his calm demeanor and skill even in the challenging environment.
