Many of this season’s WITB balls are on the verge of being deemed illegal. The off-season in golf has seen quite some ripples lately. The SNS forums around the game have had to witness to-and-fro chatter about the play on the course and even outside of it—with the latest one being the universal golf ball rollback announcement discourse. Many golfers have commented on the changes involved in the ruling, and while some claims have been legitimate, many others have tried to make sense of it in their own terms.

The USGA and R&A recently made news after the authorities decided to announce a universal golf ball rollback. As per the reports, the change is to impact not only elite players but nearly all popular golf balls played, both professionally and recreationally.

Irish pro Pádraig Harrington recently made a tweet on his X handle where he dissected the news for a better understanding of fans as well as the players. The post got a thumbs up from Rory McIlroy, who commended the golfer for his understanding of the move and the bifurcation of the same.

A tweet under the thread talked about altering the testing rules for the Overall Distance Standard, potentially increasing the swing speed from 120 mph to 125 mph. The golfer wrote: “Now let’s change the driver head and the number of clubs in the bag. Remember the ball/driver and number of clubs have all been changed before, and the game thrived.” The mention of changing the driver head and the number of clubs in the bag suggested a broader perspective on the adaptability of the game.

Quoting the tweet, Michael S Kim made a revelation and expressed it with a touch of humor. Kim suggested an alternative idea to the proposed rollback of golf ball specifications—limiting professional tour players to carrying only 10 clubs in their bags, as opposed to the current allowance.

The player’s tweet reads: “🤔 Instead of roll back, how about 10 clubs for tour pros? Might bring back shot making that everyone loves. I’ve never thought about this idea haha.” Kim speculated that such a change might encourage and revive the art of shot-making—a quality appreciated by many in the golfing community.

As the golfing community tries to understand the ifs and don’t of this new change, here’s something that is under the audience’s radar of confusion.
