Despite having millions in profits and some of the best golfers in the world, there is one place where LIV Golf has to bend its knees. And that is the OWGR ranking.
Since its initial days, the Saudi-backed league vehemently desires the ranking for its players. But it remains out of their reach. The situation remains unaffected despite the new $3 billion merger, with now a new angle appearing in the story. Let’s find out more.

LIV Golf gave its players world-class facilities and compensation but it has been almost a year and they can’t obtain rankings for its players yet. And with the news of the $3 Billion merger, things remains unchanged for them with even bigger problems. According to Golf Digest, last Tuesday OWGR board members held a meeting where the topic of LIV Golf was discussed. At the meeting, the OWGR officials expressed concerns over the LIV Golf Orlando event where golfer Sebastian Munoz had confessed that he played conservatively to secure a team victory for Torque.
On the topic of ranking R&A Chief Martin Slumber said, “What we’re trying to work through is rankings, is trying to rank eligible tours. I think a lot of people get confused that rankings is trying to rank individual players. It’s eligible tours that are comparable, and then we rank the players within that.” LIV representatives have written to OWGR officials denying the accusations. But there is one more thing bothering them.
Other grave concerns of OWGR authorities

Besides the cheating concerns, some more things that are bothering OWGR authorities are multi-year contracts of LIV Players. They fear that the contracts will prevent them from getting relegated. They have also objected to the integrity of the individual amid a team contest and the lack of a merit-based qualifying system. LIV previously announced a relegation and promotion plan to counter the same but the authorities remain unimpressed.
LIV loyalists like Greg Norman and Phil Mickelson have long fought this war but the results are yet unclear. Reportedly the merger has been given the date of 31st December 2023 to be finalized. Will LIV Golf be able so sort out the problem before that?
