The final major tournament of the men’s golf season is almost in its final leg. The first two days of The Open Championship have been absolutely thrilling. The 4-day event is halfway through, and those having an early exit from the course have been declared. Players such as Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley, Sahith Theegala, and Tony Finau have missed the cut.
It has been an unexpected journey so far. But as the saying goes, ‘there’s light at the end of every tunnel, and Justin Thomas and Sahith Theegala have witnessed that light. Despite missing the cut, both the golf pros have achieved something tremendous at The Open—and coincidentally, together!

JT’s year has not been great so far. He started his year on a not-very-great note and lost his groove even further as the season progressed. His 2023 season took a real hit when he finished the US Open with a second-round score of 81 and missed the cut. Even more surprisingly, the golfer has missed a cut in all four majors this year!
Despite the failure, The Open has been a record-setting experience for the golfer. Justin Ray, a golf journalist, pointed out on Twitter that during the second round of the championship, the golfer displayed a record-breaking improvement in his score. On the first day, JT shot 82; on Friday, he was able to score an even par 71.
In a nutshell, the former world number one’s score improved by 11 shots from round 1 to round 2. And that massive improvement has been the best increase seen in the first two rounds at Royal Liverpool since 1936. The previous record was held by C.A. Winks, who improved his play by 16 shots, from 92 to 76 that year.

Surprisingly, JT was not the only golf pro who improved his score and set the record this week. The 25-year-old Sahith Theegala also set the same record, although with a score arguably better than that of Thomas.
Sahith Theegala coincidentally sets the same record at JT
The young golfer turned pro in 2020 and hasn’t had a career win so far. The golfer has had seven top-10 finishes in the 2022–23 season and is currently ranked 35th in the OWGR. The Open was a great opportunity for the golfer to mark his maiden win, but sadly, that was not the case.

Though he missed the cut, the golfer was able to set the same record as Thomas. During the first round, he shot 79, and then improved his score by 11 shots and scored 3 under par 68 on the second day. Unfortunately, that massive increase in his score was still not enough for him to make the cut at Hoylake.
