The heated three-billion-dollar merger between the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour came to light more than a month ago. However, its consequences and answers have yet to reach the golf world. The PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan, momentarily stepped away from his role last month after the public announcement of the merger due to ailing health troubles. However, just days ago, he returned to the pompous role of Tour Commissioner, apologizing for his unexpected break. But the return of the 53-year-old brings with it lingering questions surrounding a possible new golf entity.

Barring a few members, the remaining golf professionals and board members appear almost clueless about the future of the PGA Tour-LIV Golf alliance. Now, amidst all the mayhem, another massive setback has hit the PGA Tour. It features a prominent board member, who has been with the league for the past 12 years, stepping down from his position, all thanks to the new alliance!

Just like most professional golfers, several policy board members were also kept in the dark when it came to the LIV Golf merger. This information just recently came to light thanks to the former AT&T executive, Randall Stephenson. As per the Washington Post, he stated that the deal “came to fruition without board oversight.” Along with these never-before-revealed insights, Stephenson also made a very shocking announcement: his resignation!

Through a letter dated July 8, Stephenson forwarded the information of his stepping down to fellow board members, effective immediately. However, according to the copy of the letter obtained by the Washington Post, the decision did not appear to have come out of the blue.

In fact, it mentioned that Stephenson had “some serious concerns” about the possible association of the PGA Tour with the PIF. This further urged him to take a similar step weeks prior to the actual resignation date. However, the former executive delayed the process due to the sudden disappearance of the PGA Tour Commissioner.

Now that the Commissioner is back, Stephenson has officially handed in his renunciation. Interestingly, though, this announcement came just three days prior to a scheduled investigation. This inquiry aims for the PGA Tour to testify before a congressional committee regarding the alliance. The hearing will most likely take place on Tuesday, and Jimmy Dunne (the policy board member who helped broker the deal) and Ron Price (the tour’s chief operating officer) will be among those who face the questions put forth.

In addition to the news about his resignation, Stephenson’s letter also contained the reasons associated with it, and they certainly deal a huge blow to the popular merger!

The reason behind Randall Stephenson’s resignation and his parting words

The former chief executive of AT&T, while addressing his resignation in the letter, focused on the role he has played as a board member for 12 years. He mentioned that his aim was to serve the best golfers in the world and imbibe the virtues of sportsmanship through golf. Highlighting these values, Stephenson also added that he was hoping for the board to comprehensively reassess its governance model.

Moreover, he stressed the need for the governing group to look for alternatives regarding financial sources “beyond the current framework agreement“. As far as the reason behind his stepping aside from the responsibility is concerned, he elaborated on the previously mentioned serious concerns. Stephenson, concerning the current framework of the merger, said that he could not “objectively evaluate or in good conscience support” it.

Regarding the matter, no comment has yet been made by the PGA Tour. However, an official note was sent to the members referencing the same and thanking Stephenson for the aid he has provided throughout his career. Furthermore, the league explained to the golfers that Stephenson’s position will be soon filled by another director, though no deadline was provided regarding the same.
