The second event of the new LIV Golf season ended in Tucson with a win by Iron Heads’ star Danny Lee. Though the win may have accumulated massive growth in his earnings, new developments in the breakaway Tour are emerging which may sound troubling to the golfers. According to notable golf journalist Alan Shipnuck, the future of many defectors in the Saudi-funded Tour may be in trouble.
Since its initiation, LIV Golf has been in the headlines for its unique style in the sport. From 54 holes format to no cut-line policy, the lucrative Tour has taken enough measures to look different from its nemesis PGA Tour. Nonetheless, one of the biggest factors of the Saudi-funded Tour has been its massive money spending.
The new Tour’s exorbitant money offerings have attracted many prominent PGA Tour stars to make the jump. While the big names may have enjoyed the guaranteed money from the golf league, the security of others may be at stake in the foreseeable future.

Worrying report for LIV Golf players
The newly founded Tour has spent nearly a Billion dollars within the first year of its commencement. Top names such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and many more were offered nine-figure cheques to make the jump. However, the Tour may finally bring an end to its spending spree on individual players.
LIV Golf looks to focus more on its team structure rather than individual competition. According to Alan Shipnuck, if the purses grow further in the Tour, it will mostly be applied to the team component. The decision-makers of LIV Golf look to make the team format their main product. Shipnuck also had a conversation with an executive of the Saud-funded Tour.
The unnamed executive claimed that a lucrative Tour would have invested all the money into its team format beforehand, but would have failed to sign all the big names. Nonetheless, the executive then said, “In time we may move in that direction—we’re fluid on that” while talking about focusing on team product. While LIV Golf may reconsider its model, it could only be possible if the contracts of the current roster expire or are restructured.
Though many top names have signed deals with the lucrative Tour, “There aren’t as many multi-year deals as people think”, said the LIV executive. With that being said, it only puts the future of the defectors in danger. As the players of the Saudi-funded Tour are currently suspended from PGA Tour, they won’t have any Tour to compete in, on being dropped by LIV Golf.

Nonetheless, let’s hope for the betterment of all golfers and most important for a brighter future for golf.
