LIV Golf isn’t the only bucket full of laughter. Contrary to the stuffy reputation of the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, the American and European circuits also love a joke or two, especially when it lightens the mood for the players.

With the PGA European Tour’s Genesis Scottish Open to kick off on Thursday, the players had an unexpected segment of trying to spell the name of the defending champion this season. Let’s see what it’s all about.

Is it Schauffel or Schauffele? Maybe one ‘f’? Or is there a double ‘L’?

While preparing for the Genesis Scottish Open 2023, the golfers had a hard time trying to spell ‘Schauffele.’ The DP World Tour shared the reel with fans of five renowned golfers trying to spell the name of their comrade who joined the PGA Tour in 2017.

Given the complexity of the French-German name, the players had a roar. Xander Schauffele sneaked up behind Jordan Spieth while he struggled to get it right. He missed one ‘E’ and Scahuffele stared at his friend in disappointment. Max Homa, Yannik Paul, and Richard Mansel got it wrong as well, till they came to Eddie Pepperell. The English golfer took his time, spelling it out mentally, till et voila! Someone nailed it.

Although Homa did get it right on his second attempt, it didn’t count as a win. Pepperell, on the other hand, was spot on. It was a testament to his slow and steady attitude that helped him win not one but two events on the European Tour back in 2018.

It was fun watching the golfers struggle

Xander Schaffele’s name doesn’t really roll off the tongue. Fans had the time of their lives watching their favorite golfers attempting to spell out ‘Scho-filet’ with the defending champion lurking around and distracting them.

Some fans were truly amazed at Pepperell’s conquest. Comments such as “Eddie Pep = legend!”, “Knew Eddie would get it”, and “No surprise that Eddie got it. Smart boy” were flowing in. One fan found it particularly hilarious that the 2020 Olympic gold medalist kept popping up to see how his comrades were doing.

“Love Him creeping there,” the fan wrote. While another fan explained the meaning of the golfer’s last name which brought so much joy to the players. “In South German dialect, it’s a cold pork chop. To be enjoyed with mustard and potato salad. With best regards from Rheinfelden.” But that’s not all.

The hilarious video drew the attention of the PGA Tour’s official Instagram account as well as the brand Skratch, which supports the light-heartedness of the Professional Golf Association’s events, commented, “Can Xander even spell it?” Even the $40 billion clothing and lifestyle brand Adidas commented, “Is it: c-h-a-m-p-i-o-n….. did I get it?” With a line named after the Olympic golfer called the Xander Schauffele gear, the giants of the industry couldn’t help but join in on the fun.

The Genesis Scottish Open seems to be preparing to start on a fun note. All the players are excited, and Scahuffele, in particular, is hoping to claim the title again.
